Our Gillette ProGlide Shield Experience

We geeked out over the Gillette ProGlide Shield (in the privacy of our own bathroom, of course). Our love for this Gillette model goes back several years, through several different versions. And each time, it does so well in our tests that our lead tester has continued to purchase and use this model as his main razor ever since he first tested it in 2023. We've test-driven a lot of shaving products in our career, and this one is our long-standing favorite for a reason.

We've kept all of the past versions of our ProGlide Shields. Each time we test the newest design, the first thing we do is grab all our past winners and compare them to Gillette's most recent release. And each time we discover the same thing: This top-tier model hasn't really changed much in terms of quality, components, features, and functions, and we hope it never does, because there's nothing more we could ask of it.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Shave Quality

Based on our tests and hands-on experience, the ProGlide delivers one of the best shaves around, accomplishing more in one pass than most of its peers can do in two or three. This saves you time in the morning and makes shaving less of a chore.

For several years, we've pitted the ProGlide side by side against all of the razors in our lineup and have always felt it delivered the best shave. Its blade cartridge is packed with five thin, super-sharp blades that slice through whiskers, leaving only silky-smooth skin behind.

The precision blade trims our scruff seamlessly and precisely. It's great at getting in hard-to-reach areas and shaping the edges of our beard and sideburns.

Glide and Comfort

The Gillete ProGlide lives up to its name and was one of our top performers when it came to its comfortable glide. We never worried about cuts, nicks, or razor burn.

Even when plowing through several days' growth, the ProGlide Shield never snagged on hair. The five sharp blades and double-lubricated strip help it seamlessly glide right across our skin. The lubrication strip is one of the best we've tried, and it lasts much longer than most. It also has a decent skin guard at the bottom of the blade head that does a good job of stretching skin on the face and neck, allowing for a closer shave and preventing it from clipping our skin.

One of our favorite features of the ProGlide Shield is its multipivoting head. This ingenious design allows the blade cartridge to move up and down as well as side to side. This allows the razor head to maintain better contact with the contours of our face and neck, requiring fewer passes and less manual maneuvering.

Handle Ergonomics

Gillette uses a standardized razor handle for most of its higher-end cartridge razors. We've tested this design through the years and feel it does the job well and prevents our hand from slipping.

A slight arch in the handle comfortably fills the palm of the hand. It also has extensive rubberized grips on both sides, providing a solid grasp even when your hands or the razor are wet (shower shave anyone?). Although some of us wished the handle could be a little meatier, most of us liked its form and function. The handle measures about 4.75 inches long and is made from solid metal, giving it a nice bit of heft.

Build Quality and Durability

We had no complaints after testing this razor's construction quality and resilience. In fact, one of us has used the same ProGlide for more than three years, just replacing cartridges as needed.

A solid metal handle, unobstructed attachment process, and a simple but sturdy razor cartridge allow the Gillette ProGlide Shield to be relatively immune to casual breakdowns. While no razor is indestructible, we feel this one will give you a year or two of service if you take care of it.

Ease of Cleaning and Blade Replacement

This razor is a breeze when it comes to rinsing or replacing old cartridges. In fact, it does both as well as or better than most of the models in our lineup.

We got a lot of solid shaves out of each cartridge before noticing a decrease in shave and gliding performance. But when it was time to swap out cartridges, it was simple and quick. Just a push of a button to dispatch the worn-out blade. Then simply press the handle head into the protective tray and click into a fresh, clean cartridge.

Initially, we assumed a five-blade shaving system would translate into a lot of caked-on crud; however, the backside of the ProGlide has a wide-open design, which allows tap water to easily pass through. To sum up, our assumptions were wrong, and we were happy about that. This razor is quick to rinse clean.

Should You Buy the Gillette ProGlide Shield?

Yes! We love this razor, and we think you will too. We've tested and retested the ProGlide Shield for several years, and we haven't found anything that compares. Sure, some razors have unique features, and might be worth considering if you have specific needs, so we've highlighted them in this review. However, when it comes to performing well across the board, we think the Gillette is tops. It appeals to the broadest range of users, and we think it's worth the investment.

What Other Razors Should You Consider?

If you have sensitive skin, the Gillette SkinGuard is the one we'd recommend. Though it only has 2 blades to the ProGlide's 5, our testers found it has a seamless glide that rarely, if ever, irritated the skin.
