This thermometer is loaded with features that make it incredibly easy to use.
The Braun app is the main reason you'd consider this thermometer, and worth the investment if you need a convenient, reliable way to monitor everyone's health in your household. It stores an unlimited number of readings, is very easy to navigate, and tracks temperature trends, symptoms, and medications for multiple users.
We were also impressed with the backlit display, optional silent mode, and nifty nightlight that adds just enough glow to let you see what you're doing without disturbing little ones in the night. Plus, the included lens filters make cleanups a breeze.
When used with proper technique, this ear scanner is very accurate. On average, it gave readings within 0.2°F of our core temperature, which is better than most.
The age-specific fever indicator lets you know whether the temperature is normal or a cause for concern for ages 0-3 months, 3-36 months, and 36+ months.
Dislikes
The downside is that the ThermoScan has a lengthy startup, which can be annoying if you're pressed for time. Still, the actual read time is only two seconds, which is fairly rapid.
It also requires ear pulling, which can make using it on yourself or on a squimy child more difficult. And if you don't properly align the lens with the eardrum, it can skew the results. With practice, though, we think most users can get the hang of it, and the built-in stability sensor will help ensure you get an accurate read.
Lastly, this thermometer is crazy expensive and has the continued cost of replacement filters. The thermometer won't work unless a filter is in place, so there's no getting around it.
Should You Buy the Braun ThermoScan7+?
If you have the funds to spend and don't mind the extra finesse that this ear thermometer requires, you'll love all the extra perks of the Braun ThermoScan 7+. Keeping track of your family's health couldn't be easier with the Braun app, and features like the age-specific fever indicator, stability sensor, and nightlight make temperature checks easier on little ones. The key questions you'll want to ask yourself are: do you need an app, and are ear readings realistic for your household?
What Other Thermometers Should You Consider?
If you don't need a smart thermometer, the Braun ThermoScan 7 is essentially the same thermometer, minus the nightlight and silent mode, for a lower price. Or, the Braun ThermoScan 5 is even cheaper and bypasses the lengthy startup, but loses a lot of the bonus features of the 7+. Lastly, the Kinsa QuickCare Smart stick thermometer is a more affordable smart option for babies under 6 months, but the app is less streamlined, and the probe isn't as accurate as the Braun lineup.
