An extra large air fryer that makes succulent chicken and crips well, but isn't as intuitive as others

Our Verdict

The Chefman TurboFry Touch air fryer offers a spacious cooking area and excels at producing juicy chicken and crispy tater tots. However, its overall performance is somewhat inconsistent. While it shines when crisping donuts, chicken, and tater tots, it falls short in temperature accuracy, which was around 17°F lower than the stated temp. The large 8-quart capacity makes it suitable for families or those who frequently cook in bulk. But the small control panel and average cooking performance for some foods may be drawbacks for some. At its price point, it presents a decent value, especially if chicken is a staple in your diet, but there are more well-rounded air fryers available on the market.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Ease of Use

The Chefman TurboFry offers a mixed user experience that falls in the middle of the range. The control panel offers several presets, including settings for fish (375°F for 10 minutes), fries (400°F for 18 minutes), chicken (400°F for 22 minutes), and meat (375°F for 18 minutes).

One of the unit's strengths is how easily the drawer opens and closes with just one hand, making it convenient when juggling other cooking tasks. The drawer slides smoothly and feels sturdy. While this may seem like a given, the drawers in other air fryers require some muscle to open.

Ease of Cleaning

The major frustration comes during cleaning, specifically when removing the crisping plate. This component takes more effort than it should, which becomes particularly annoying when cleaning up after cooking messy or greasy foods. On a positive note, the drawer is dishwasher-safe on the top rack and fits comfortably without taking up excessive space. The non-stick coating generally works well, but oil and grease accumulate in the basket's corners, requiring extra scrubbing.

Cooking Quality

The Chefman TurboFry's cooking quality is below average for the group. The tater tots were a bit overcooked and hard, rather than crisp. The exterior was evenly colored, but the interior was disappointingly mushy. It did excel at crisping French fries, with a soft, buttery interior and a delightfully crisp exterior.

The chicken wings emerged with impressively juicy interiors and properly crispy skin. We were pleased with how evenly the chicken cooked throughout, maintaining moisture while developing that coveted crispy exterior that makes air-fried chicken so appealing. The results were consistent across multiple test batches, suggesting this air fryer has found its sweet spot with poultry preparation.

The salmon results fell somewhere in the middle of expectations. While the fish cooked properly and maintained reasonable moisture levels, it didn't achieve the level of crispiness on the outside. The results were perfectly edible and would satisfy most home cooks, but those looking for restaurant-quality seared salmon might need to adjust their expectations or technique.

Cooking Speed

The Chefman TurboFry Touch generally aligns with recipe recommendations, though it requires some attention to prevent overcooking. Most foods cooked within the expected timeframes, but the uneven heat distribution meant we had to check sweet potato fries more frequently to prevent the edges from burning. The chicken wings cooked predictably and efficiently, reaching proper internal temperatures without any rushed timing concerns. This air fryer doesn't require preheating for most cooking tasks, which can save time during meal prep. However, for foods that benefit from immediate high-heat contact, a brief preheat period might improve results.

A key part of cooking is getting the temperature just right, which is why we measured each unit's temperature accuracy. The Chefman's temperature was inconsistent and varied by 16.7 degrees.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

Temperature Accuracy

Temperature accuracy is one of the Chefman TurboFry Touch's weakest areas. While the unit maintained consistent temperatures, the actual cooking temperature differed from the display setting by a noticeable margin.

This inconsistency explainsthe mixed cooking results we experienced. Foods that are more forgiving of temperature variations, like chicken, tasted great and reached food-safe temperatures despite the inaccuracy. However, items requiring precise temperature control, such as baked goods, were hit-or-miss. Once you understand your particular unit's temperature tendencies, you can adjust your cooking approach accordingly. However, this learning curve may frustrate users who expect their appliance to perform exactly as indicated on the display.

During external temperature testing, the front of the unit reached only 133 degrees Fahrenheit during operation, well below the 140-degree safety threshold. This means you're unlikely to accidentally burn yourself.

Should You Buy the Chefman TurboFry Touch?

The Chefman TurboFry Touch could be an excellent choice if you frequently cook chicken and make larger batches. Its 8-quart capacity makes it particularly appealing to families or anyone who likes to meal-prep multiple servings. The unit's compact footprint, despite its large capacity, means it won't overwhelm smaller kitchen counters. However, it is harder to use than many competitors, and cooking quality is hit-or-miss, with a tendency toward inaccurate temperature control. We think there are better options in the large-basket market that better meet most needs.

What Other Air Fryers Should You Consider?

If you're looking for better overall consistency and advanced features, we recommend the Cosori TurboBlaze. It has excellent temperature accuracy (so you won't need to make any adjustments) and dual-zone cooking capabilities, making it ideal for preparing multiple items simultaneously. The larger capacity and more intuitive controls make it worth the additional investment for serious home cooks. If you want to meal prep, entertain larger groups, or prepare multiple dishes at once, the Ninja Foodi 8-Quart 2-Basket is a fantastic two-basket option that costs more but could save you time and energy.
