Our Verdict

The GoodBaby FC-IR202 forehead scanner is a must-have for its ease of use, reliability, and affordable price. After testing over a dozen models side-by-side, this one quickly became our go-to for quick, accurate reads on squirmy kids and time-pressed adults. It's one of the fastest thermometers we've used, and has a large, color-coded display and built-in memory that takes the guesswork out of fever checks. However, a smudged lens or sweaty forehead can skew the readings. And, while you technically can use it to check a bottle or bath temperature, it's tricky, and the results are less reliable. Still, it's easily one of our favorite body thermometers.

The first thing we noticed about the GoodBaby scanner was how fast and easy it was to use.

Relative to other thermometers, this touch-free model is about as noninvasive, intuitive, and rapid as it gets. Just hold it about one inch from the center of the forehead, and your reading is ready in one second.

Plus, the results were accurate and consistent in our tests, reading only about 0.3°F lower than our core body temperature.

Despite the low cost, the FC-IR202 has a full suite of ammenities. The backlit display is larger and easier to read than other models, and the screen lights up orange or red and beeps to indicate a fever. You can also mute the sound, so you don't wake little ones in the night.

The color-coded display helps you quickly determine if you have a fever or not.

It also stores up to 35 past readings, which is handy if you're tracking daily temperature trends for a medical condition or while trying to conceive.

Dislikes

Like all infrared thermometers, though, the results can be skewed by a smudged lens, a sweaty forehead, or the surrounding temperature. So, it's best to measure on a dry, hair-free forehead that's had some time to adjust to room temperature.

We also wish the household “Object Mode” were more reliable. First off, it's hard to even switch the device object mode. But more importantly, the readings can be off by a few degrees, which limits how much we trust it for checking things like bath water or bottles.

Should You Buy the GoodBaby No-Touch FC-IR202?

The GoodBaby is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a quick, touch-free, easy-to-use thermometer. It's affordable, accurate, hygienic, and suitable for kids over 3 months, making it a great option for daycares and families. We appreciate that it won't wake sleeping little ones and that its built-in memory lets you monitor your temperature trends. All in all, we think most people would be happy with the IR202—just keep in mind that, like other infrared thermometers, sweat, hair, or extremes in room temperatures can affect the readings.

What Other Thermometers Should You Consider?

We loved how affordable and easy the iHealth No-Touch PT3 forehead scanner was to use, but it proved less accurate than the GoodBaby in our tests. We also like the Frida Baby 3-in-1 infrared thermometer, which adds an optional ear mode for improved accuracy, though it costs quite a bit more. Or, if you prefer a traditional stick-style thermometer for newborns, the Vicks SpeedRead and Vicks SpeedRead ComfortFlex are reliable value choices.
