Our Verdict

The Follow Stagg EKG is a highly capable kettle that would be a welcome addition to many kitchens. Its stylish design is worthy of a Victorian duchess's tea room, while offering modern conveniences such as variable temperature control, an included timer for steeping, and altitude adjustment. Ironically, with its emphasis on pouring control and slow flow rate, it is more finely tuned for high-end pour-over coffee than tea. As one of our testers who owns a kettle said, “If I want to make tea, I take off the lid and pour out of the top.” However, if you have the time to pour a nice cup of coffee, this kettle is a fantastic choice. Our Analysis and Test Results

The Fellow Stagg EKG is an excellent sidekick for brewing pour-over coffee and has become the standard at many high-end specialty cafes. Whether sitting on your desk or coffee bar, this kettle is a statement piece. The EKG features a beautiful modern design and minimalist base that ensures it won't overcrowd your setup. The narrow gooseneck spout and counterbalanced handle restrict water flow to a slow, steady, and controllable stream. These features significantly aid in brewing the perfect pour-over coffee. This model also features adjustable temperature controls, a built-in timer, automatic shut-off, and temperature holding — all excellent features for anyone aiming to achieve manual brew recipe targets. You can also upgrade the handle and lid knob to wood for an even classier aesthetic.

It has some features that no other kettles do, such as altitude adjustment, pre-boil (a sanitation step), and chime volume control. However, it is not the most intuitive interface, but they try to combat this with a “Guide Mode” that has presets for various tea and coffee brewing methods.

Boiling Speed

Equipped with a powerful 1200-watt heating element, the Fellow Stagg EKG demonstrated impressive speed in our tests. It brought 500 mL of water from a starting temperature of 57°F (approximately 14°C) to a boil in just over 3 minutes. This performance places it among the fastest gooseneck kettles we have evaluated, comparing favorably even to non-gooseneck rapid-boil models.

This speedy boiling time ensures that the wait for hot water is minimal, integrating seamlessly into your everyday morning routine without causing noticeable delays. You won't be left waiting impatiently for your caffeine fix.

Temperature Accuracy for Green Tea

In the specific test for green tea temperature accuracy, the Fellow Stagg EKG performed poorly. Its performance wasn't just slightly below average; the kettle regularly stabilized more than 5°F above the crucial green tea temperature range of 170-180°F. Holding temperatures accurately in this lower range can be challenging for kettles primarily designed for near-boiling coffee temperatures. Consistently brewing above this range means you could easily scorch delicate green tea leaves, resulting in more bitterness than expected unless you actively monitor with a separate thermometer and compensate accordingly.

This is perhaps the most significant weakness of the Fellow Stagg EKG, especially when combined with its inherently slow pouring speed (which might not be ideal for certain tea-steeping methods). For individuals who frequently enjoy green tea or other lower-temperature infusions, there are likely better-suited kettles available that offer superior accuracy in this specific range.

Temperature Accuracy for Coffee

Conversely, brewing coffee is where the Fellow Stagg EKG truly excels, validating its design focus. It practically nailed the 200°F target temperature test, with measurements showing an average deviation of only half a degree. This level of precision is exceptional and highly desirable for coffee brewing.

Maintaining an accurate and stable temperature, typically between 195-205°F, is critically important for pour-over coffee. It ensures that you don't over-extract (leading to bitterness) or under-extract (resulting in sourness) the complex and volatile flavor compounds locked within the coffee grounds, leading to a balanced and flavorful cup.

Pour Feel

The thoughtfully engineered ergonomics, particularly the balanced handle and the overall weighting of the Stagg, allow for a very comfortable and natural pouring experience. This design minimizes wrist strain, even during the slow, controlled pours required for methods like pour-over. The handle incorporates a small, integrated top knob or rest area specifically for your thumb, providing an anchor point that significantly enhances stability and precise control over the water flow's direction and rate.

With a pouring angle typically around 45 degrees, simply relaxing your wrist naturally results in a continuous, finely controlled stream of water — precisely the kind of flow that is perfect for meticulously wetting the coffee grounds during the bloom phase and subsequent pours in pour-over brewing.

Ease of Use

While the Stagg EKG presents a slight learning curve primarily due to its single-dial control system for navigating menus and settings, it arguably offers the most comprehensive set of functions available in any electric kettle we've tested. Not only can you precisely set your desired water temperature degree by degree, but it also features the previously mentioned 'guide mode' with convenient preset temperatures for various common teas (like black, oolong, and green) and coffee types. A standout feature, especially relevant for users like us at GearLab located at higher elevations, is the ability to adjust the kettle's altitude setting. This enables the EKG to accurately calculate the local boiling point (which decreases with increasing altitude) and heat water more efficiently and precisely, preventing unnecessary boiling or inaccurate temperature readings. This altitude compensation likely contributed to its strong performance in our boil time tests compared to kettles without this feature.

Beyond the core functionality, several thoughtful details enhance usability. These include small rubberized feet on the bottom of the kettle, providing a more secure, less slip-prone placement on countertops.

Precision Pouring

Another area where the Stagg EKG excels is in its precision pouring capabilities. The combination of the gooseneck spout's specific curvature and opening size, along with the kettle's balance, is engineered explicitly to deliver the quintessential pour-over coffee experience, allowing for meticulous control over where and how quickly water contacts the coffee bed.

Something crucial to consider alongside precision is the flow rate. The Fellow Stagg EKG is intentionally designed to have a particularly slow pouring speed. Fellow states this restricted flow rate is calibrated for the optimal duration required for wetting coffee grounds during the bloom and for executing controlled pouring patterns common in various pour-over techniques, maximizing extraction quality. While perfect for pour-over, this slow flow might feel tedious if you primarily need a kettle for rapidly filling a large French press or steeping tea.

Should You Buy the Fellow Stagg EKG?

If you are a dedicated coffee fiend, particularly one who cherishes the ritual and precision of pour-over brewing, and you have the budget to invest in a top-of-the-line model renowned for its design and performance, then the Fellow Stagg EKG is almost certainly on your radar, and the answer is likely yes. Its blend of aesthetics, precise temperature control for coffee, and optimized pouring dynamics make it a category leader. However, if your hot water needs are more varied — for instance, if you frequently drink green tea (where its temperature accuracy falters) or primarily use your kettle for applications requiring faster pouring (like boiling water for cooking or filling large teapots) — this kettle's specialized nature might make it feel a bit too niche and perhaps not the best all-around value for your specific needs.

What Other Electric Kettles Should You Consider?

The Offacy gooseneck performs almost as well as the Stagg in many key areas and beats it in green tea temperature accuracy by a wide margin. The Breville IQ is our pick for a pitcher-style kettle that also has variable temperature controls and excellent looks. If you have a wider use case than just coffee, it can be a good all arounder. Our highest scoring kettle, the OXO Brew Gooseneck, also does clearly quite well, but has a more industrial design that I think is quite a different style than the Stagg.

Value

The Fellow Stagg EKG sits firmly in the premium price category for electric kettles. Its value is, therefore, highly dependent on user priorities. If aesthetics, specialized pour-over performance, and precise coffee temperature control are paramount, the high cost can be justified as an investment in a tool that excels in its specific niche and doubles as a countertop design statement. The unique features like altitude adjustment also add tangible value for users in specific environments. However, considering its poor performance with lower green tea temperatures and intentionally slow pour rate, its value diminishes significantly if you need a versatile, all-around kettle for various teas or quicker boiling tasks. Cheaper competitors, like the Offacy mentioned, offer comparable or even superior performance in some metrics (like green tea accuracy) at a lower price point, making the Stagg EKG a less compelling value proposition purely from a functional cost-benefit perspective unless its specific design and coffee-centric features perfectly match your needs and budget.

Conclusions

The Fellow Stagg EKG stands out as a premium electric kettle, masterfully blending elegant design with precise functionality tailored for the pour-over coffee enthusiast. Its exceptional temperature accuracy in the coffee brewing range, coupled with its balanced handle and gooseneck spout, provides an unparalleled level of control for achieving optimal extraction. Unique features like altitude adjustment, pre-boil, and customizable chime volume further distinguish it from competitors.

However, the Stagg EKG isn't without its drawbacks. Its temperature accuracy for green tea is a notable weakness, potentially leading to bitterness if not carefully monitored. The slow pour rate, while ideal for pour-over, can be less convenient for other hot water needs. The single-dial interface, while feature-rich, presents a steeper learning curve compared to more straightforward kettles. Finally, its premium price point positions it as a high-end investment.

The Fellow Stagg EKG is best suited for discerning coffee lovers who prioritize design, precise temperature control for coffee, and the art of pour-over brewing. While it excels in this niche, those seeking a more versatile kettle for a wider range of beverages or a more budget-friendly option may want to consider alternatives.
