Our Analysis and Test Results
Computer users who want to take their wireless mouse from the office to the gaming cave should look no further than the high-performance Logitech G305 Lightspeed, which thoroughly impressed our testers with its adjustable sensitivity, dongle storage, and near-zero click latency. This is a speed- and detail-oriented mouse that's ideal for daily users who want something fast and reliable.
Comfort
Most of our testers really enjoyed the long, flat, and generally comfortable shape of the Logitech G305 Lightspeed, but where this mouse truly excelled was in its click force testing. The Lightspeed boasted one of the lowest grams of force required to click either of its top buttons. In practice, this translates to easier clicking and less strain on your hand if you plan on gaming and making many precise movements over a long period of time. Our lead tester noted that this mouse “can feel a little flat, but nowhere near as flat as the Apple Magic Mouse.”
The overall design of the G305 Lightspeed is a bit flatter than most other mice on our list, which some of our testers, including our extra-large-handed teammate, found a bit uncomfortable. This wasn't a dealbreaker, just a design metric that's noteworthy for those seeking a more rounded mouse “hump.”
Tracking and Performance
For small, ultra-detailed precision movements, like drawing or handwriting, it doesn't get much better than the G305 Lightspeed. Even though our lead tester didn't notice any angle-snapping capabilities, he was able to easily draw straight lines and basic shapes, like rectangles and spirals.
This mouse uses a proprietary HERO optical sensor, which the manufacturer claims gives the G305 ten times more power efficiency than previous models. As such, we noticed that this mouse was incredibly precise when we performed small, detail-oriented tests.
Our team of lab-based testers noted no issues whatsoever with this mouse's wider tracking and tiny precision movements. It's designed to deliver accuracy, even at velocity. However, we should note that it only uses wireless connectivity, not Bluetooth.
This mouse is a phenomenal pick for gamers and other intensive users who want a high-octane wireless option that's got exceptional tracking, next-to-no latency, easy clicking, and an awesome, high-tech sensor.
Scroll Wheel
Unfortunately, the scroll wheel is one of the few places where the G305 Lightspeed did not stand out, but our testers posit that this shouldn't be a deal breaker for most users. The scroll wheel's click is light and pleasant, and there's only slightly more resistance when scrolling than compared to other options.
Unfortunately, the Lightspeed does not feature 4D or true infinite scrolling. “If all you ever use is the scroll wheel constantly, maybe avoid this mouse, but it isn't so awful that you'd need to stay away,” said our top tester.
Programmable Buttons
For users who love to customize their gaming mouse buttons, we have good news. The Logitech G305 Lightspeed can support up to nine different programmable tasks with the use of the brand's G Shift feature within its G HUB software, which allows people to create an entirely new, secondary set of programmed commands for their mouse or keyboard.
In terms of actual, on-the-mouse buttons, the G305 sports five without g-shift and six with g-shift. This is also one of the few with an adjustable polling rate (1000, 500, 250, 125 Hz) and a power mode to Performance or Endurance (to save battery).
Surfaces
The G305 Lightspeed is one you can use in various locations. We trialed in on nine different surfaces, and it only struggled with clear glass. Otherwise, fabric, cardboard, desk tops, and uneven wood were no match for this mouse.
Battery
This mouse has a bit less battery life than many others we reviewed, and that's likely because of its top-tier sensor. The G305 Lightspeed has a manufacturer-claimed battery life of 250 hours, or just over 10 days on a single AA battery. With user reports backing this, it seems that most users would agree with this estimated 250-hour metric.
