Looking for a do-all detail trimmer? With excellent nose and hair trimming capabilities as well as packing additional attachments to assist with detailing work and eyebrow cleanup, the Philips Norelco 5000 may have all you need to keep your own kissable face looking good between shaves. “I was impressed with the Philips Norelco 5000's slide-style trimmer attachment to fix up my beard and neck line. It works so well, I don't see the need in buying a separate trimmer for those jobs!”, beams our bearded lead tester. One secret is the high rpm motor found in the trimmer itself which powers the trimmer's whisker-removing performance.

Maybe the only weak point of the Philips Norelco 5000 is its battery life, which we tested head-to-head as lasting less than most other products in our lineup. Higher performing motors burn through power a little faster and if you use this trimmer for your ear and nose as well as other duties, you'll be running it more often as well. “The compromise of performance over battery life is worth it to me for the Philips Norelco 5000, although this isn't the trimmer I'd suggest you travel with.”, explains our lead tester. For that task, look for either a manual trimmer like the Groom Mate Platinum XL Hair Trimmer or a long running trimmer like the Micro Touch Titanium Max.

The Philips Norelco 5000 excels at not only nose and ear hair trimming, but can be used to lean up neck, beard and eyebrows, too.

For those looking for a dedicated ear and nose hair trimmer without the fancy extras, the ConairMAN Lithium-Powered Cordless Trimmer is it. The bulbous rotary blade may cut those types of whiskers better than most, powered by a super long-running lithium AA. This battery is the secret weapon, giving the ConairMAN the longest runtime of any other powered trimmer in our lineup. “The ConairMAN makes a good travel option, given its compact design,” adds our lead tester. The head is easily removable for a quick rinse between clips.

There's no real magic to its impressive runtime except that it ships with a lithium battery rather than an alkaline. Almost all the powered trimmers would see a major bump in run times if they used the same. But, at least the ConairMAN Lithium-Powered Cordless Trimmer already comes with one, providing so much power, you may forget you'll ever need to replace the battery in its lifetime! Our only minor gripe is the bottom battery cover, which twists to reveal the battery itself. This twisting motion is also how you turn off the trimmer. “Twist too much and you'll disassemble the trimmer into its discrete parts, which you won't want to lose!”, explains our tester. The rechargeable Manscaped Weed Whacker 2.0] also makes a great travel option. It features a rechargeable internal battery you can top off whenever you have access to a USB-C cable.

The ConairMAN Lithium-Powered Cordless Trimmer has a very low-profile and packable design and a very long-running lithium battery, perfect for traveling.

For a no-nonsense linear-style trimmer at a great price, the Micro Touch Titanium Max is really hard to beat. The included guards for its single, non-removable blade allow it to be used for eyebrow trimming as well, when it's not being put to use for your ears or nose. Price tag is low, and the battery life is long — all working with you to save you some money. “If budget is really tight, I think this is a great option.”, adds our tester. Plus, this trimmer has a small LED light to help guide your trimming.

Its weakness may be in its most critical task of trimming nose and ear hair. “Because it only has a linear-style trimmer, you'll have to rotate the Micro Touch Titanium Max head by hand in order to trim everything”, explains our tester. That's less convenient than the whirling rotary heads found in most other trimmers in our lineup. But if that doesn't deter you, this is a great budget buy. If you'd rather have a trimmer with multiple heads to work with, the Wahl Trimmer 5545-400 costs just a little bit more.

The non-removable linear blade of the Micro Touch Titanium Max is surprisingly adaptable to many grooming jobs.

If you want to do your trimming business in the shower, the Manscaped Weed Whacker 2.0 was made just for you. “The shower is a great place to get this personal chore done, as it makes cleaning up simpler”, explains our lead tester. One of the ways it pulls off the feat of being shower-ready is by use of an internal, rechargeable battery, negating the need for any sort of battery cover where water can come in. And buying batteries will seem old-fashioned, as this trimmer can recharge via a USB-C cable — probably the same one you use for your phone already.

A rotary head is the only one available, so if you need to perform other tasks, you'll have to find an additional solution. “And one of the compromises of using a rechargeable battery as found in the Manscaped Weed Whacker 2.0 is a shorter runtime between charges”, admits our tester. Still, the convenience of never having to buy batteries seems worth it. Replacement heads are also available for many years of whackin'. Check out the Zorami BRC001 for a more cost-conscious shower-compatible, IPX7-rated trimmer, if the Manscaped price tag doesn't agree with you.

With an IPX7 water-resistance rating, the Manscaped Weed Whacker 2.0 can be safely used in the shower and rinsed completely without fear of damaging the trimmer.

The Wahl Trimmer 5545-400 is a comprehensive manscaping tool for many male facial needs and comes at a great price. It works like a standard nose hair trimmer and then some. The included slide cutter clicks into place and includes various guards for length adjustment. Our tests rendered a four and a half hours runtime, which is more than reasonable.

Keeping track of and using all the various add-on features requires some practice,” commented our tester. Also, the rotary trimmer seems almost like an afterthought. It doesn't fit flush with the main body of the trimmer, for instance. It works just fine and doesn't look as odd as you might think, but it feels like it could have used a little more consideration. If you prefer a rotary-style cutter, we highly suggest stepping up to the well-designed ConairMAN Cordless Trimmer.

Dissassembly For Cleaning Good dissassembly, and a vacuum to suck up hairs
Power 1x AA (Not Included)
The Panasonic ER430K groomer is very similar to other models we tested, but what sets it apart is the inclusion of a fan-powered vacuum function that captures and contains stubble as it's created. “We found the vacuum wasn't perfect, as it didn't catch every stray hair,” our tester observed, “but it does serve its purpose.” Far fewer hairs go on the loose with this nose hair trimmer than with any of the non-vacuum-equipped models.

On the downside, the addition of the fan motor significantly decreases the battery life. When you turn on this device, you inevitably engage all the features. “As a result, its battery life lasts only a fraction of the time of other high performers,” our tester noted. Use the Panasonic ER430K regularly, and you can expect to replace the batteries more frequently than you would with many other models. For folks who travel more frequently or just want to avoid dealing with battery replacements, a battery-free option worth considering is the Groom Mate Platinum XL Hair Trimmer.

The Groom Mate Platinum XL Hair Trimmer is entirely manual. You use two hands to turn the cutter yourself. It works like any powered version, but our lead tester commented that “it takes quite a bit longer to do any given trimming job.” For those who travel a lot, live simply, or can't be bothered to maintain a battery-powered device, this is the best choice. The construction is robust and simple; with no electric motor or circuits, the Platinum is fully submersible. We expect this product to last — speculation we aren't necessarily comfortable making about the electronic versions.

The speed of operation is its primary drawback,” our tester said. Getting an effective and complete trim with this product is more of a meditation than an efficient process. What takes under a minute with a powered version might take 10-15 minutes with the Groom Mate. If you need a trimmer with more efficiency and power, the battery-operated Remington NE3845A makes for quick, effective trimming.

How We Tested

Our initial testing kicked off during the lockdown of 2020, and we used that time to get wild and woolly in preparation for this review. We focused on just how well these trimmers cleaned us up, keeping a careful eye on how long each trimmer lasted before it ran out of power, and also how easy it was to clean up after the job was done.

We used four performance metrics to test and score these nose hair trimmers:
  • Trimming effectiveness (40% of overall score weighting)
  • Power system (25% weighting)
  • Ergonomics (20% weighting)
  • Ease of cleaning (15% weighting)

Why Trust GearLab

Our “head” of the nose and ear hair trimming department is Justin Simoni, who swings from sporting a clean-shaven visage showing off his chiseled jawline to a modern-day Grizzly Adams, depending on if he's just leaving or coming back from a long-term residency in the high mountains. But Simoni knows once back, it's best to clean up, and his personal grooming kit is stacked with useful tools, like his own favorite whisker choppers. Justin is helped along by expert nose and hair trimmer, Jed Porter, who admits his mom bought him a nose hair trimmer when he entered high school. Embarrassing? Yes, but we'll go to great lengths to test and demonstrate our authority on the topic. Jed isn't afraid of revealing intimate details if it demonstrates his decades of experience with this particular type of product.

Our tireless team of trimmers hard at work finding the best tool for you!

Analysis and Test Results

Look your best, using a simple and relatively inexpensive nose hair trimmer. Thankfully, picking the right one for you doesn't have to be a second job, we've done all the legwork already for you, finding just the right tool for the job.

Worse Value
Better Value

What's the Best Value?

We don't factor in retail price when testing and scoring, but we can understand that you want to get the best value for your hard-earned cash. Lucky for you, most nose hair trimmers are reasonably priced, so locking in on what looks the best for you is not a life-or-death decision. Still, let us suggest some better value picks over others.

We found the excellent grip useful when it came to manipulating the Micro Touch Titanium Max in close quarters.
Credit: Justin Simoni

If you want to keep things simple, the Micro Touch Titanium Max is a great suggestion. This linear/slide-style trimmer can handle nose, ear, and eyebrow trimming jobs. It comes with a battery and, to boot, has a little light to help you see into any nooks and crannies. The battery life is hard to beat as well, meaning it has the potential to keep saving you money over other options throughout its life.

The different attachments available on the Wahl really help out when tackling different grooming jobs.

The Wahl Trimmer 5545-400 is found on the other side of the spectrum, bringing with it a collection of different heads for different jobs — including a rotary head for nose and ear duties. This trimmer has the most adaptability for the price, although the unit as a whole just isn't as polished in its design as more expensive options.

Feel from to take the Zorami BRC001 in the shower for morning cleaning rituals, then rinse it off right afterwards.

Although one of the simpler trimmers, the Zorami BRC001 caught our eye with its water-resistance rating, which equates to shower use and easy rinsing without fear of shorting out the device.

Trimming Effectiveness

Your purchase of a nose hair trimmer is a purposeful one: get in, get the job done, and get out to live out the rest of your life. The nose hair trimmers that perform this mission efficiently and effectively scored the best, but we also kept a keen eye on how adaptable the trimmer can be to related jobs, like cleaning up your beard line or handling a bushy eyebrow.

In general, powered nose hair trimmers are both faster and a little more effective than their manually-powered counterparts. Rotary trimmers are going to be faster than their linear/slide-style brethren for nose and ear tasks, but don't handle other jobs much at all. Bulbous, “mushroom” rotary-style trimmers cut more thoroughly than less aggressive, cylindrical ones.

The ConairMAN Lithium-Powered Cordless Trimmer has a more bulbous rotary head that performs ear and nose hair trimming efficiently.

The ConairMan Lithium has the only bulbous “mushroom” shaped cutting head we tested, and we found it to cut more effectively than the others. Dedicated rotary heads are the most plentiful hair trimmers in our review, and you'll find effective ones on the Remington NE3845A, Zorami BRC001, Manscaped Weed Whacker 2.0, and ToiletTree LED Trimmer, amongst others.

The detailing attachment is perfect to keep those pesky wandering whiskers from ruining your perfect appearance. If you the lifting is light, you may not need a separate detail trimmer.
Credit: Justin Simoni

For excellent nose and ear trimming, as well as included heads for other jobs, the Philips Norelco 5000 is really hard to beat. We found its detail trimmer attachment perfect to clean up the outline of our own beard, while the eyebrow attachment kept our supercilium looking formosus. The Wahl Trimmer 5545-400 comes with a similar array of attachments to handle many minor tasks on your face.

The included guard on the Wahl Ear, Nose, And Brow trimmer's linear head worked perfectly in taming our bushy brows.

We also reviewed unpowered options, which, as we expected, are considerably slower than powered versions. Luddites and those who try to live “off the grid” as much as possible might appreciate an unpowered option, but we expect most folks won't be able to justify the time and energy required of an unpowered orifice groomer. The Groom Mate Platinum XL is faster than we expected and our top choice for a manual trimmer, but still significantly slower than any electric model we tested.

Power System

Most nose hair trimmers available are powered by a single AA battery, providing enough power for dozens of quick facial trims before the power source needs replacing. For those looking for infinite runtime, manual trimmers do exist. Check out the The Groom Mate Platinum XL for this acoustic experience, which could be a perfect option to have lying in waiting, nestled deep in your spur-of-the-moment travel bag. The compromise to manual trimmers is a distinct lack of quickness in completing your trimming jobs.

For the rest of the trimmers in our lineup, battery life is the main differentiating factor when ranking the power systems found in each. A long-lasting trimmer helps avoid the embarrassing personal grooming faux pas of missing a trim. The majority of the trimmers come with their required AA batteries, although some did not — a detail for the budget-minded to double-check when comparing prices. For the test, we simply let all our powered trimmers run until they couldn't run anymore, carefully noting when they threw in the towel, like some last man standing ultra endurance foot race.

One of the secrets to the ConairMAN Lithium-Powered Cordless Trimmer impressive runtime is the inclusion of a lithium AA battery rather than alkaline.
Credit: Justin Simoni

The undisputed winner of the battery runtime test was the ConairMAN Lithium-Powered Cordless Trimmer. It left all its competitors in the dust by many hours. The secret to its success is the inclusion, right in the box, of a higher-capacity lithium AA battery, rather than a more conventional alkaline AA. In the spirit of fairness, it should be noted that any AA-powered nose hair trimmers can also take lithium AAs and show a notable runtime improvement. The MSRP of the ConairMAN is higher than most, possibly because of this juicier power source.

Not trailing too far behind is the Micro Touch Titanium Max, which vibrated its linear cutting surface for almost 15 hours on its included alkaline AA battery. This is the best runtime for your money, although we suspect performance may not be as good as some of the other products in our lineup. The longer runtime may be attributed to a slower-moving head, and a quicker-moving blade may give a better trim.

We were impressed by the Wahl Ear, Nose, And Brow trimmer's long runtime, as well as its array of included accessories.
Credit: Justin Simoni

The Wahl Trimmer 5545-400 buzzed along for more than 4.6 hours on its included Alkaline AA. Wahl provides a great balance between price, features, and long runtime. Because of all its different trim heads, you may find yourself running this unit more often, as it can handle eyebrow and beard detailing as well as nose and ear trimming duties.

The Manscaped Weed Whacker 2.0 comes with an internal rechargeable battery as well as a USB-C chord and is an excellent option for those that don't want to have to bother with ever replacing batteries.
Credit: Justin Simoni

If changing batteries and manually trimming both sound unappealing, the Manscaped Weed Whacker 2.0 is a rechargeable nose hair trimmer, which can be topped up anywhere its USB-C port can be plugged in. You'll lose overall runtime per charge when compared to any of the disposable AA battery options, and the price of this unit is high. But you gain the ability to use it in the shower, which is a trick few other trimmers in our lineup can pull off.

The insect-like buzzing of tiny trimmers echo'd out of our own bathrooms, as we pitted them all against each other to see which hair trimmer would outlast the rest!

Ergonomics

How functional and comfortable are all these nose hair trimmers? To answer that, we noted how comfortable each trimmer felt in hand, how easy it was to turn on and off, and whether there were any additional features that enhanced our personal grooming experience, like a rubberized grip and textured surfaces.

Generally, we favored trimmers with separate on/off switches that are easy to use and separate from the battery cover. Trimmers with a more oval or even smoothed-out triangular profile were easier to handle than a slimmer, round profile. The majority of trimmers need only one hand to operate, except the Groom Mate Platinum XL, which requires two.

The Philips Norelco 5000 feels reassuring in hand, giving confidence when trimming sensitive areas.

The Philips Norelco 5000 really wooed us with its superior ergonomics. The larger-diameter body was easy for us to hold in our hard-working hands, enhanced by a subtle diamond texture in the plastic body. The bottom battery compartment was never in danger of unscrewing while using the trimmer, and the separate power slider was easy to operate, with a confident “click”.

The rubberized and textured handle of the Micro Touch Titanium Max felt great in hand. The only downside to its ergonomics was the linear-only clippers, which forces you to manually rotate the device for ears and nose duties.

We found it a joy to use the Micro Touch Titanium Max. This trimmer is smaller than others, but the rubberized and textured handle really makes pivoting the trimmer to just the right angle a breeze. The push-button power switch is cleverly located on the opposite side of the handle from where you'd grip it, allowing it to be both out of the way and close at hand at the same time.

The small power slider on the Wahl Ear, Nose, And Brow trimmer well-placed to be accessible, but the battery cover is not. We found it easy to remove it inadvertently.

Some trimmers were a mixed bag. The Remington NE3845A has a twist-activated switch, which isn't our favorite, but its shape and texture make up for this shortcoming, and we rated it higher than most. The Wahl Trimmer 5545-400 has an excellent assortment of heads to choose from, but its battery cover is found right where you grip the trimmer, and can easily slide out of place, which sometimes sours the user experience.

Ease of Cleaning

After all your hard work, trimmings will be left behind, and these can get in and around your trimmer of choice. Being able to handle this little chore easily makes for a better grooming experience.

Unpowered models are fully washable without the risk of ruining the electronics inside. The manually-powered Groom Mate Platinum XL can be washed in soap and water without worry.

Some nose hair trimmers have official water resistance ratings, so rinsing the body of trimmings is safe to do.

Surprisingly, only a few nose hair trimmers have any sort of water resistance rating, but there are at least two in our lineup that sport an IPX7 rating. The Zorami BRC001 has such a rating, making rinsing both the removable rotary head and the body an easy feat. The Manscaped Weed Whacker 2.0 is also rated, giving this more stylish trimmer a leg up on much of the competition.

Although it doesn't sport a water-resistance rating, the Philips Norelco 5000's manual does state that you may rinse off both the heads and body under water, and if you would like a thorough cleaning of the head, you can let it soak in water while you do other tasks, then come back to rinse and dry. The instructions for the Panasonic ER430K also note that this trimmer can be fully immersed in water to make cleaning easy.

Many of the nose hair trimmers can be at least partially disassembled and have removable trimming heads that facilitate cleaning. The Wahl Trimmer 5545-400 is one such nose hair trimmer, but be aware: some of the heads sport very tiny and delicate parts that can be more easily broken during disassembly. The Zorami BRC001 and ConairMAN Lithium-Powered Cordless Trimmer both have removable heads to assist cleaning both inside and out, whereas the Micro Touch Titanium Max does not. The Micro Touch's linear blade shouldn't catch trimmings inside, and the included brush should be all you need to keep things tidy.

How to Pick the Best Nose Hair Trimmer

Nose hair trimmers may be a tool that doesn't get the spotlight too much, but this simple tool could make all the difference in how you look when you face the world at large. But because you may have never thought about them before, you may have little idea of how to choose the best one. Here are some answers to questions you may have:

How Often Do You Need a Trim?

Our hair grows at different rates, and depending on your needs, you may need a trim every day or only every once in a while. Our Trimming Effectiveness metric not only accounts for how well a trimmer gets the job done but also how quickly. If you're trimming every day, you should also consider how easy it is to clean the trimmer, which we discuss in our Ease of Cleaning metric. Under the specs listed in our comparison chart, we also assess the average disassembly required for each trimmer.

We tested in “real world” conditions, including cleaning each in the manner specified by the manufacturer. In most cases that means removing the cutting head and rinsing it.

Do You Need to Trim More Than One Orifice?

We consider these both nose and ear hair trimmers — depending on the design, they're quite effective at maintaining a trim appearance in both orifices. Rotary cutters are useful for nose and ear hair, while a slide cutter — imagine a miniature electric razor — is really only useful for the lower reaches of your nose. We list the type of cutter under the specs in our comparison chart, and some models we tested feature swappable heads to include both. We also noticed that the design of the trimmer can play an important role, especially for trimming ear hair. We discuss these nuanced differences in our Ergonomics metric.
