Our Verdict

When you just need something to take a quick group photo, or are a minimalist photographer who likes to freehand most of your shots, a tabletop model like the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod might be all you need. It has no adjustability beyond its ball head, but it fits in a jacket pocket and can support lightweight cameras or cellphones (ours didn't come with a phone mount, but for a few bucks more you can buy a kit with one included). For head-level photography, you'll need a table, bar, or flight of stairs, but the PIXI can easily be set up for ground-level shots anywhere you want. The PIXI is a specialty tripod, so don't expect it to handle the full gamut of photography needs, but for just-in-case moments, the PIXI is affordable and is as portable as it gets.

The Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod weighs just .51 pounds, making it one of the lightest options on the market. Its dimensions are also unparalleled, with a closed length of 7.3 inches. There are few models we'd dub a “go-anwhere” tripod, but the PIXI truly can go anywhere your cellphone can.

This model is also easy to set up and take down: simply attach the camera and separate the 3 legs. To adjust the camera angle, press the button on the ballhead and move it however you need. This is also a surprisingly durable model, with very few moving parts other than the ballhead and the leg hinges.


Dislikes


This is about as minimalist as a tripod gets, and when comparing this tripod to more traditional models, we felt extremely limited by the lack of height adjustability. For photo shoots at soccer fields or concerts, we could hardly use the PIXI without a reliable table or elevation change to heighten our camera setup. However, when evaluating this tripod for what it is, we actually found it quite useful. We were more likely to bring this along in situations where we'd normally leave our tripod at home, such as longer hikes or backpacking trips, or when shooting in tight spaces where there's not enough room to set up a full-size tripod.

The PIXI has limited load capacity, rated at 2.2 pounds. This was fine for cell phones and APS-C mirrorless cameras, but the PIXI won't keep most full-sized camera setups balanced, especially with a larger lens. It also isn't the most stable tripod for side-hill setups, since you can't adjust leg length.


Should You Buy the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod?


For content creation, or quick group photoss with your cell phone or smaller camera, the PIXI Mini works well. It's as small as a tripod can be and sets up in a matter of seconds making it the ultimate convenience piece. However, this is not the right fit for photographers who want proper adjustability or need a tripod to support full-sized camera equipment.

What Other Tripods Should You Consider?


Check out the Amazon Basics 50-Inch Lightweight Tripod as an affordable model that's still lightweight but has more adjustability than the PIXI. The K&F Concept 60 Inch Carbon Fiber is worth a look if you need a portable and affordable tripod with real load capacity, boasting a rating of 17.6 pounds.
