Our Analysis and Test Results
Air Cleaning Performance
With one of the best price-to-performance ratios of all the units we tested, the Levoit Core 300-P Air Purifier was a standout competitor in our Air Cleaning Performance metric. In only 46 minutes, this product was able to scour the air in our medium-sized testing room and remove 99% of all particles.
We set the Levoit Core 300-P on full blast and measured to see how quickly it eliminated pollutants. In the first 10 minutes of our test, this unit was able to clear 74.6% of all particles larger than 2.5 microns and 63.1% of all small particles, between .5 and 2.5 microns.
Noise
When measured with a decibel meter from six feet away, the Levoit Core 300-P Air Purifier was a bit louder than many units we tested, whirring to a 54.2 decibel rating on its highest fan setting and 34.8 decibels when switched to low.
A 54.2 decibel reading at its highest setting means that the Levoit Core 300-P might distract the average user if they're, say, trying to watch a movie or get high-focus work done. This decibel measurement is similar to a large office or a coffee percolator, according to the folks at International Noise Awareness Day. This is likely not a deal breaker for most people, and the machine does come equipped with loads of great settings and features that make it easy to set a timer and leave the room, should the fan noise prove too annoying.
Ease of Use
Having a sleep timer and a handful of options for fan speed and automatic shut off is essential for those who frequently use an air purifier but have a busy roller coaster of a schedule. The Levoit Core 300-P Air Purifier requires very little setup time, and offers three different fan speeds for clearing gunk out of your living space's air quickly.
Weighing in at 7.6 pounds and boasting a modest height of 14.25 inches (with handles for easy transport), the Levoit Core 300-P is petite enough to fit onto a nightstand or into a living room corner. It also offers more premium features, like a sleep timer of 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours, a filter health monitor, and an interface light. This small but important LED light makes the unit incredibly easy to operate in a dark room before snuggling in for bed.
Operating Cost
With a manufacturer's recommendation of changing the air filter every eight months and a high energy suck on its highest setting, the Levoit Core 300-P Air Purifier is a bit pricier to operate than many units on our list. Sure, it has a low sticker price, but if you zoom out and look at the cost of running this unit 24/7 for several years, those extra filter and electricity costs can quickly add up.
“The Levoit Core 300-P operates with relatively high power consumption the entire time it's on, even on its low setting,” said our lead tester after measuring this unit's energy usage with a power meter plugged into a wall socket in our lab facility. When its fan was set to high, the Levoit pulled a staggering 54.3 watts of energy, and when we dialed it back to low, it was still draining 19.7 watts, which is more than many units use on their maximum fan speed. If this air purifier was run 24/7, 365 days per year on a mix of high, medium, and low fan speeds, our team estimates that it'll cost roughly $50 for the electricity alone (using the average U.S. cost of $0.17 per kilowatt hour). You'll also need to replace its $30 air filter every eight months, per the manufacturer's instructions.
Should You Buy the Levoit Core 300-P Air Purifier?
For those who aren't too noise sensitive or who are on a tighter budget and don't want to splurge on our overall winner, the Levoit Core 300-P Air Purifier is a solid runner-up. It boasts powerful air cleaning performance and great features, like a sleep timer and filter lifespan monitor. It's a bit pricier and louder than some others we tested, but its great price-to-performance ratio makes it worth the mild distraction of fan noise.
What Other Air Purifier Should You Consider?
If you've got a little more to spend and want a whisper-quiet model, our overall winner, the Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max can't be beat. Or, if you genuinely hate having to remember to order and change the air purifier every several months, the Shark NeverChange allows users to keep the same filter inside the device for an impressive five years. If you're looking for an air purifier with more smart features and functionality, consider upgrading to the Levoit Core 400S.
