Our Verdict

This superb keyboard is more than just elegant — it's ingeniously designed to enhance productivity. Whether you're a typist endlessly pressing on alpha keys all day or a business worker taking advantage of function keys and a number pad, the Logitech MX Keys S excels. Plus, it's simply just fun to type on. However, these rich features will cost you with a higher price tag and a less portable design. Still, if you want a keyboard with customizable software, intelligent lighting, modern hotkeys, and the ability to connect to multiple OS devices, the MX Keys S is the ticket.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The MX Keys S is a supremely feature-rich keyboard with scissor-membrane switches that provide an excellent typing feel. It's been around since 2019, but the newest 2023 release sports modern hotkeys and compatibility with the upgraded Logi Bolt receiver and Options+ customization software. Plus, it's made with recycled materials, low carbon aluminum, and packaged without any plastic so you can feel confident with your responsible purchasing decision.

Connectivity and Ease of Use

The Keys is a true powerhouse when it comes to connection options. Users can choose between a Bluetooth wireless connection that connects to anything and everything or a USB receiver that offers a faster connection speed to computing devices. Its compatibility list is outstanding: PC, Mac, Linux, Chrome, iOS, and Android. However, if you are a dedicated Mac user, Logitech offers that, too.

Setting up the Bluetooth connection takes a little more time than the plug-and-play of the USB receiver, but it is easier to swap between devices once connected. Both wireless options performed magnificently well, creating no noticeable lag during our hours of testing. While the Bluetooth option had an impressively long useable range of 40+ feet, the USB dongle was shorter, measuring in at 11 feet. Also, be careful not to lose the USB dongle, as there is no dedicated storage space on board.

We love the ''keys'' of the MX Keys! On the surface, they have a fingertip-shaped design that allows for more confident, speedy typing with fewer errors. Below the surface, they are supported by low-profile scissor switches that offer a stable, tactile keystroke. Plus, each keypress quietly clicks as you press down, sending sensory feedback directly to your ears, instead of the entire work crew around you. The slim profile provided by the scissor switches offers a more ergonomic position that puts less strain on your wrists. And, it doesn't require spending extra money on a wrist rest. But, if you're a mechanical key purist, it's worth looking at Logitech's MX mechanical for greater tactile feedback and durability.

The MX Keys is a pure joy to type on. Scooped keycaps and low-profile scissor switches offer a tactile feel and put less strain on the wrists.

If you frequently use the F-row keys, you'll be pleased to know that the keyboard comes with Options+ software to fully customize their functions. 17 keys in total can be programmed. The software is highly intuitive and easy to use. For more details on exactly what the software is capable of, read on below to the “Features” section.

Features

The features of this Logitech keyboard are numerous and impressive.

It can simultaneously connect to up to three devices and has dedicated toggle keys to let users swiftly swap between them. If you're switching between Mac and Windows devices, the process is smooth since the keyboard's modifier keys have clear labels for both operating systems. Multi-device connectivity is further enhanced with the Options+ “Flow” feature, which allows users to transfer files between devices with a simple copy-and-paste function.

There are also loads of other time-saving media buttons and hotkeys that boost efficiency. For example, in addition to the standard volume up/down and track forward/back buttons, there are shortcuts to send emojis, mute your microphone, and activate talk-to-text. If there's an action you want that isn't already built-in (for example, spread windows), you can add it in with Options+. The media/hotkeys are dedicated, meaning you won't have to use the function key to access them, but if you prefer direct access to the function keys, you can swap the roles with the software. You can even create “Smart Actions,” which are basically beefed-up macros that automate multiple tasks with a single key press.

The wide escape key is similar to a traditional Apple format, forcing strict Windows users to adapt to the slightly shifted layout. This didn't bother us, but some touch typists used to the PC format may find this feature frustrating.

For the speedy typists out there, we measured a five-key rollover that will keep the keyboard from missing your swift keystrokes. This should also suffice for most games, though an N-key rollover is best.

The keyboard also has top-notch lighting and sensors. It features a white backlight that shines through the keycaps for easy navigation in the dark. If you work in low-light conditions, its backlight will automatically adjust to the ambient light to create a pleasant, calming atmosphere. This unique feature is not seen in most of our other wireless keyboards. In bright, fluorescent light (and to our dismay), the backlight will not turn on, which saves battery life. The keyboard also has a cool motion sensor that automatically wakes it from sleep mode when your fingers approach it and before you even begin typing.

Portabiltiy

The Keys S is slim, but the full number pad and navigation keys add extra length. Therefore, it didn't score as well as other models with a pared-down design.

At 17" long, it's likely to just slip into a standard-size backpack, but you'll want to check the dimensions of your bag if you're planning on toting it around.

While long, its slim profile offered by its scissor switches makes it thin enough to easily slide into an overstuffed backpack. Relative to other full-size models with membrane-dome or mechanical switches, the MX Keys occupies a low volume of space.

But it's on the heavier side, weighing in at 29 ounces (or almost two pounds). For a pared-down version, check out the MX Keys S Mini.

Battery Life

The information from this metric comes with a caveat. Because some keyboard batteries can last years, we mainly go off the manufacturer's claim of battery life rather than a measured lab result. Because we cannot verify the manufacturer's claims, this metric is not used in our overall scoring.

The MX Keys S is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion polymer battery that is expected to last five months with the backlight turned off. While this is less than the models that use alkaline batteries, it's still plenty of time, and you can use the keyboard while charging it. With the backlight on, the battery quickly drains, only lasting about 10 days. Logitech addresses this issue by adjusting the backlight to the ambient lighting. Plus, the keyboard has a battery indicator light to tell you when it's running low: green means the battery is 11-100% full, and red means the battery level is 10% or below. You can get a better estimate of battery life with the Options+ software. The software will even notify you when it's time to recharge.

Should You Buy the Logitech MX Keys S?

Finding a reason not to pull the trigger on the MX Keys S is a challenge. If you're looking for a top-quality, fully-featured, low-profile device, this is it. But if you value a compact layout, you'll need to look elsewhere. One can easily find a less expensive keyboard, but not with the same level of detail as the MX Keys. Plus, you'll know your money was responsibly spent on a sustainably produced, high-end keyboard.

What Other Wireless Keyboards Should You Consider?

The biggest downsides of this keyboard come down to personal preferences and budget. For those seeking a higher profile and more tactile feel with similar high-end features, the mechanical Keychron K10 is worth considering. On the other hand, if portability is paramount, the Logitech Pebble Keys 2 shares the same attention to detail but caters to users on the go. It'll also cost you less. For the same full-size sleek profile at a budget price, the Arteck Ultra-Slim fits the bill.
