REASONS TO AVOID

Starts-up in high mode
Disruptive beeping with each button press

The Bionaire Premium Digital 8.5" Twin window fan stands out as a versatile and efficient choice, offering a myriad of features that cater to the needs of discerning users. One of its standout attributes is its precise control, allowing adjustments in single-degree increments and providing unparalleled customization to suit individual preferences. This level of control extends to its intuitive interface, which makes it easy to identify and switch between different modes and settings, enhancing user experience and convenience. Another notable feature is its ability to stand vertically, offering flexibility in placement and optimizing airflow distribution within the room. We recorded an impressive maximum speed noise level that registers far below most, highlighting the whisper-quiet operation of this window fan. Importantly, its decent energy efficiency underscores its economical operation, making it an environmentally conscious choice.

However, amidst its array of strengths, the Bionaire Twin does have its share of drawbacks worth considering. One notable inconvenience is its tendency to initially start in high mode for a moment, potentially causing a brief disturbance before settling into the desired setting. Furthermore, the limitation of adjusting light brightness only when the fan is on may pose a minor inconvenience for users who prefer to adjust settings independently. The audible beeps accompanying every button press may get tiring to someone who prefers silent adjustments. Lastly, while the fan performs adequately in circulating air, we measured a mediocre air movement that may not deliver the same level of air differential as more powerful full window fans such as the Air King 9166F 20" Whole House. Even when considering these shortcomings, the Bionaire Premium continues to stand out as an excellent option for individuals in search of effective cooling solutions, offering a seamless combination of convenience and high performance.

As our top choice, the Bionaire Premium Digital 8.5" Twin Window Fan distinguishes itself as a versatile and efficient option.

REASONS TO AVOID
Fan must be removed and rotated to switch modes
Lacks automatic shut-off feature that is temp-based
Cannot stand vertical

The Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin stands out as a practical and versatile choice, offering a range of features at an affordable price. Notably, our tests revealed commendable noise levels, ensuring a relatively quiet operation that won't disturb daily activities. Furthermore, our thrust test demonstrated a force exerted by this fan at 1.27 newtons, indicating satisfactory performance, especially within the context of other window fans. Its simplicity in design and operation adds to its appeal, providing users with straightforward functionality without unnecessary complexities. Moreover, its ability to free-stand enhances flexibility in placement, accommodating various spatial constraints within the home. A subtle yet appreciated addition, the inclusion of a power switch on both sides significantly boosts convenience.

While the Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin boasts numerous strengths, it also presents some drawbacks that should be carefully considered. Its cubic feet per minute (CFM) readings reflect lackluster air movement, potentially limiting its effectiveness in larger spaces. Users may also find it inconvenient to physically remove the fan and manually rotate it to switch between intake and exhaust modes, detracting from ease of use. Furthermore, the absence of a temperature shut-off feature may be a concern for users seeking automated climate control functionality. Lastly, the fan is not suitable for vertical standing, restricting its versatility in placement options. These shortcomings are kind of par for the course with budget options, but if you feel like investing just a couple more Hamilton's, we'd suggest the Bionaire Premium Digital 8.5" Twin could be a better alternative in the long run. But if the listed drawbacks don't seem like dealbreakers to you, the Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin remains a viable option for anyone looking for a window fan that functions well, and isn't too complicated. We like it, particularly for smaller spaces where noise levels and ease of operation are paramount considerations.

The Amazon Basics presents itself as a practical choice for individuals in search of a simple and effective window fan solution.

The Air King 9166F 20" Whole House window fan emerges as a powerhouse, offering a multitude of features that cater to the needs of households seeking efficient ventilation for the entire home. Boasting an impressive volume of air movement, this fan excels at circulating air throughout an entire house, ensuring consistent airflow and optimal comfort in every room. Its powerful performance is further underscored by our thrust test results, which calculate the amount of propelled force the fan can push out. The Air King rated high amongst our selection, continuously demonstrating that it can ventilate large spaces effectively. The cherry on top of this fan lies in its clearly labeled power dial, facilitating effortless adjustments that elevate the user experience to new heights.

Despite its numerous strengths, the Air King 9166F 20" Whole House does have several drawbacks that need to be taken into account. Firstly, its substantial weight may pose a challenge during installation, requiring additional effort and care to securely mount. More worrisome, our noise test revealed a significant noise level compared to others. Unfortunately, the Air King doesn't have a wide range of power in its available setting, so you're stuck with the high noise volume at any level. If installation ease and noise level are paramount concerns, the Bionaire Premium Digital 8.5" Twin may be a better fit. Despite these drawbacks, the Air King 9166F 20" Whole House fan has its perks, and it is a good choice if you need powerful and efficient ventilation through larger spaces or whole-house circulation.

REASONS TO AVOID

The Vornado Transom introduces an intriguing new approach to window fans, offering users a distinctive fanning experience unparalleled by any other model on the market. The fan's sleek, low-profile design allows for discreet window placement, seamlessly blending with any decor, while the inclusion of a remote offers added convenience, enabling users to effortlessly control settings from a distance. Its unique “closing” feature, when turned off, prevents unwanted air exchange, ensuring optimal comfort during downtime. Our noise tests revealed remarkably low noise levels, guaranteeing quiet operation that won't interfere with daily tasks. Additionally, its remarkable energy efficiency highlights its eco-friendly and cost-effective design.

However, despite these commendable strengths, the Vornado Transom does have some drawbacks that warrant consideration. Its CFM readings suggest relatively poor air movement compared to other window fans, potentially limiting its effectiveness in adequately ventilating larger spaces. Users may also find the screen turns off too quickly, and the touch screen controls inconsistently register finger touches, detracting from the overall user experience. We noted that the fan's inability to be disassembled for cleaning poses challenges in maintaining long-term performance and cleanliness. Considering the relatively high price tag, some users may perceive the Vornado Transom as a risky investment. In such cases, opting for a more budget-friendly and conventional window fan like the Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin may be a safer choice. With these considerations in mind, the Vornado Transom persists as an attractive choice for those seeking a modern, efficient window fan solution, particularly well-suited to smaller spaces.

Analysis and Test Results

In our pursuit of a thorough assessment of each window fan's performance, we conducted rigorous testing across five crucial metrics: circulation, noise levels, ease of cleaning, efficiency, and installation ease. In the following breakdown, we reveal the standout performers in each category, offering valuable insights into the top-performing fans across various dimensions.

What's the Best Value?

In our lineup, we offer multiple options designed to meet diverse needs and budgets, defining value as the balance between performance and price. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a blend of power and dependable circulation, we recommend the Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin. It is a feasible choice that is both a simple and effective cooling solution. The Bionaire Premium Digital 8.5" Twin emerges as an outstanding choice for those seeking a more comprehensive quality at a higher price point. It offers a well-balanced, high-quality fan with exceptional silent operation, making it ideal for those prioritizing a peaceful environment alongside efficient cooling. It's worth mentioning the powerful Air King as it stands apart due to its high cost, more than quadrupling other products in this line up. That being said, we know that air conditioning bills can build up quickly, so although the investment is high, it has proven to tackle multiple rooms throughout the house, solving a growing problem with trying to regulate large spaces.

Our experienced testers crafted unique testing regiments that reveal the capabilities of each fan.

Power and Circulation

For this metric, our focus is on gauging the efficiency of each window fan in circulating cool air within a room. We set up a specific room for testing purposes and strategically placed the fans at different distances and heights. By employing lines of fringe to establish distances, we assessed whether we could detect airflow from each fan across the room while also observing its effect at various levels. This methodology enables us to analyze how well the fans maintain comfort across a range of room sizes. Our aim is to offer practical insights into the power and air circulation capabilities of each fan, assisting you in choosing the most suitable option for your needs.

In regards to overall room circulation, the Air King 9166F 20" showcased exceptional performance, creating a noticeable breeze that quickly permeated the room. Our testers reported feeling the airflow almost immediately upon activation, likening it to a vigorous whirlwind. The fan effectively circulated air throughout the space, providing a refreshing atmosphere akin to being outdoors on a breezy day.

Our testers laid out colorful foil fringe across the multi-purpose test room and established a grid with predetermined distances.
Credit: Austin Palmer

Following as a distant second, the Bionaire Premium Digital 8.5" Twin fan offered an impressive cooling experience. Our testers noted a distinct feeling of cool air flowing past them, registered by the fringe that was flickering back in their direction as a nice visual confirmation. The room ambiance felt notably windier, albeit not at the intensity level of the Air King, yet still surpassing typical window fans in circulation efficiency.

Lastly, the Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin, while delivering a modest airflow, succeeded in cooling down the room by drawing in cooler air from the warehouse. Although the airflow sensation wasn't as pronounced as with other models, users still can experience a noticeable cooling effect, fulfilling the primary objective of a window fan to bring in fresh outdoor air for indoor comfort.

In our cubic feet per minute (CFM) testing, we employed a standardized procedure, constructing a CFM test box to ensure consistency across evaluations. Fans were set to their highest speed, and we sealed gaps around the fan to replicate the airflow performance you would experience at your home. An anemometer positioned about 23 inches from the bottom of the box recorded airflow in ft/min. Among the tested fans, the Air King Whole House fan demonstrated exceptional CFM performance, surpassing the Bionaire Premium Digital 8.5" Twin and the Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin by a significant margin and almost tripling the average others where able to move. The Bionaire and Amazon Basics both came in at 755 CFM, securing a tie next in line that still impressed us while testing. Not far behind, the Genesis A1 Window Fan recorded a commendable average of 669 CFM. The ability to move that much air in an instant translates to a cool oasis, allowing you to feel relaxed rather than muggy and disgruntled.

Our next sub-metric, thrust, similarly revealed the Air King 9166F 20" Whole House, Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin, and Bionaire Premium Digital 8.5" Twin as top performers. To conduct our testing, we devised a makeshift thrust rig inspired by Matthias Wandel from Wood Gears. The setup involved ensuring the arms of the rig were square before placing the fan on it in a manner that the airflow would trigger the arm on the scale. Using this rig, we systematically tested each fan on its various settings, recording both the weight and Watts to assess power. This method allowed us to comprehensively evaluate the thrust capabilities of each fan, providing valuable insights into their performance.

Noise

We thoroughly examine the noise output of each product, ensuring a comprehensive assessment for prospective users. Beginning with a standardized approach, we positioned the sound pressure level (SPL) meter consistently at a distance of 3 feet from the airflow to yield accurate and comparable measurements across all models. Following this, we conducted a detailed side-by-side comparison of each fan, carefully noting the acoustic characteristics exhibited at low and high-speed settings. Our analysis extended beyond mere decibel readings, encompassing nuanced observations of factors such as pitch, steadiness, and any discernible operational sounds like clicking, whirring, or vibrations. Recognizing the significance of perceived noise over raw decibel levels, we emphasized the importance of capturing the real-time experience of sound for potential users.

The Vornado Transom emerges as the top performer in the noise level sub-metric, earning high praise from testers for its exceptionally quiet operation. We recorded the device at a faint reading of 48.4 dBA. We noted its subdued noise output, highlighting its remarkable tranquility compared to other models. If a nondistracting fan is a priority, the Vornado Transom will not disappoint, as it is barely perceptible and devoid of any significant annoyances.

Noise testing is just one of the many factors we considered while creating the best review out there.

Meanwhile, the Sharper Image Portal Airbar also exhibited commendable quietness. We recorded only 50.6 dBA on high with a unique sound that reflected more of a tube spinning than a fan blade. Regardless, we were pleased with the output, as it receded into the background, not affecting our conversations in the test lab.

Cleaning

With prolonged use, every fan is bound to accumulate dirt. Therefore, it's crucial to consider the ease of cleaning when evaluating overall performance. Our evaluation scrutinized the simplicity with which users could detach and reattach coverings, with a particular focus on the removal of blade assemblies and accessibility to the inner sections of the front grille. Fans that facilitated easier removal of the grille and its components were awarded higher scores, highlighting their user-friendly design tailored for maintenance purposes. This metric was devised to offer valuable insights into the practicality of cleaning, recognizing the significance of hassle-free maintenance in ensuring an optimal user experience.

The Air King 9166F 20" stands out for its straightforward disassembly process, despite the manufacturer's warning against it. Testers found it remarkably easy to dismantle, requiring the removal of just eight screws to lift out the grille effortlessly. While there were some minor issues with screw tightening upon reassembly, overall, the accessibility for cleaning was great, particularly highlighting the simplicity of cleaning the small bar grille.

window fan - the air king was by far the easiest to dissemble and clean.

Credit: Austin Palmer

On the other hand, Sharper Image Portal Airbar and Vornado Transom made a simple task difficult. Both these fans have similar designs that differ from the conventional dual-blade construction that many others use in this selection. As a result, the manufacturers do not advise deconstruction, as you'll find too many little parts to keep together. We agree. It's a pain to take apart and doesn't allow you to disassemble the main components for easy access to cleaning. You're stuck with a damp cloth or utilizing a vacuum attachment to get rid of the dust accumulation. If you like a thorough spring cleaning of your fan from time to time, then you may want to seek a more simplistic design.

Energy Use

These machines can become integral in your cooling needs, requiring them to run for days on end to combat the hot summer heat that is knocking at your doors. Does the high use demand correlate to high cost? We want to break down the additional costs that may not be present at your time of purchase to help paint a better picture of the cooling tradeoffs with each fan. We took the average kWh reading on the highest setting from a Kill-A-Watt meter, then extrapolated the usage as if it were on for 12 hours a day for 90 days straight. After crunching the numbers, we didn't see a large bill accumulation from these fans, but there were a few that stood out as a definite aid to your wallet. Additionally, while energy usage is a good place to start for fiscal planning, we also took into account the energy efficiency of each machine, comparing the thrust power to watt usage and giving us a ratio to analyze across the board.

window fan - energy efficiency is the ratio of thrust power to watts used.
Energy efficiency is the ratio of thrust power to watts used.
Credit: Austin Palmer

The Vornado Transom demonstrated a low energy cost over the estimated 90 days of $4.94 from a 30.6 kWh consumption, with an efficiency ratio of 1.82 newtons per watt. These are favorable numbers to not only help keep costs down but ensure your money is put to good use. As you might expect, on the other end of the spectrum, the Air King's powerful output resulted in a hike up in energy cost estimated at $23.24 for the set time. However, when we looked at the energy efficiency of this fan, we were surprised to find a high ratio. So, although the Air King does consume more than others in the lineup, it produces complementary power to get the job done, cementing our impressions with its ability to solve whole-house heat waves.

Installation

Our last metric tested the convenience and simplicity of installing each unit. This sub-metric was integral in providing users with valuable insights into the practicality of setting up these devices.

The Amazon Basics Manual 9" Twin model demonstrated a relatively straightforward installation process due to its zip tie-like curtain lock system, which was easy to manipulate. A recommended approach involved extending one side of the curtain before the other, using thumb or finger pressure to ensure proper fitting. Closing the curtains proved equally hassle-free, with testers noting the effortless sliding motion of the fan to each side.
