Our Verdict
Our Coway Airmega Mighty 1512HH Experience
What impressed us most about the Coway Airmega is its powerful air cleaning performance. Equipped with a certified True HEPA filter, this “Mighty” unit tackled dust, smoke, allergens, and viruses like a champ, helping to relieve those annoying sneezing fits or contagious colds caused by fine-particle pollutants.
Though it has a rather high MSRP, we found it was usually on sale for far less. Considering its frequent discounts and relatively low operating costs, the Airmega Mighty has the potential to punch well above its price point, delivering years of dependable cleaning without draining your wallet.
That said, we felt like the Airmega missed the mark in other aspects. It's bulky and loud, isn't the strongest at clearing odors, and its filters are a hassle to keep up with. It also lacks a light dimmer and a child lock, essential features for young families or light sleepers. But for all its quirks, it's set-it-and-forget-it auto mode and powerful filtration make it a compelling pick.
Our Analysis and Test Results
Air Cleaning Performance
The Airmega Mighty performed above average in our air cleaning tests, thanks to a generously sized three-stage HEPA filtration system.
It quickly removed over 70% of pollutants from our test space within 10 minutes, placing it just below the best in the group. For you techies who care about the specs, that's 71% of fine particles greater than 0.5 µm and 80% of large particulates over 2.5 µm—which translates to faster relief from smoky, dusty, or allergen-filled air. Its certified True HEPA filter does the heavy lifting, trapping everything from pollen to mold, while its removable (and cleanable) pre-filter tackles the larger stuff like pet hair and dust bunnies.
This unit is also equipped with a carbon mesh filter that helped remove everyday odors in our homes. It's not quite as effective as units with pelleted carbon filters, but we found the mesh was adequate at taking the edge off cooking fumes, mild pet odors, and general household funk. If you need specialized cleaning, Coway offers Allergen, Smoke, or Pet filters for an additional fee.
For even better cleaning power, you can turn on the Airmega Mighty's ionization feature. Ionizers cause pollutants to clump together, increasing their likelihood of being trapped by the filter. However, they can also release ozone, which is a known lung irritant. All our tests were conducted with the ionizer turned off, which makes its performance without that extra boost all the more impressive.
Based on our extensive lab tests, the AP-1512HH is ideal for bedrooms, offices, and compact living spaces of around 350 ft². In this size room, the Airmega can continuously circulate the air, keeping up with smoggy urban conditions, pet dander, and seasonal allergen spikes. If you live in a coastal area or a small town with low pollution levels, you can extend the coverage area to about 1500 ft², but it'll take longer to purify the air.
Noise
The Airmega scored slightly below average in noise. It has three fan speeds: low, medium, and high. It's actually fairly quiet on low and medium, but high is noticeably loud. The whole unit also vibrates on high, which could add more noise depending on what it's placed next to. If you plan to run your purifier at max speed regularly, you might be disappointed with the noise level.
Ease of Use
The AP-1512HH is hit-or-miss in terms of ease of use. While we love that it has an auto mode and timer, we didn't appreciate the frequent filter changes and the always-on lights. As a result, it scored just about average in this metric.
What we like most about the Airmega Mighty is its hands-free operation. Its air quality indicator lights up blue, purple, or red to let you know just how polluted your air is, and when placed in auto mode, it can automatically adjust the fan speed based on your current air conditions.
We also like the Mighty's memory function, which remembers your last settings so you don't have to readjust it every time you turn it on. We found it super useful when moving the purifier throughout our home. It's not the lightest model, but its deep, ergonomic handle made it manageable to carry between rooms.
But as we mentioned, there's no option to turn the lights off, which disrupted our sleep flow when we used it in our bedroom. There's also no child lock, so our kids were able to play with the settings, which was a bit annoying.
The Coway's carbon filter has to be replaced every 6 months to keep up with deodorizing demands, while the main HEPA filter is replaced every 12 months. The filter indicator will let you know when it's time to replace each one, but it's still not super convenient to keep track of two different filter schedules. The filters can also be tricky to replace because they must be inserted in a specific order.
Operating Cost
The Coway costs slightly less to run and maintain than most units we've tested. It's fairly energy-efficient and offers solid long-term savings.
Running this unit 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we estimate it costs around $80 a year in electricity and filter fees. The filters aren't outrageously expensive, and the Airmega actually pulls very little energy to run on low and medium. However, it's very power hungry on high, which hurts its overall score in this metric. If you only occasionally run it on high, you can expect even more money savings than our worst-case estimate suggests.
