Our Verdict

If you need relief from allergies, smoke, or heavy indoor pollution, the Winix 5510 is an air-cleaning powerhouse. In our extensive testing, its heavy-duty, 4-stage filtration system was among the best at quickly removing dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, VOCs, and more. Plus, it comes with a full suite of features like an air quality indicator, an automatic mode, and an app to make everyday use simple. But replacement HEPA filters are expensive, and the fan can get a little noisy on the highest setting. All in all, it's a strong choice if you want top-notch cleaning performance and don't mind paying a bit more for upkeep.

Our Winix 5510 Experience

Released in early 2025, the Winix 5510 is one of the most powerful air purifiers on the market today. Right out of the box, this unit blew us away with its powerful cleaning performance, rapidly clearing smoke, dust, allergens, and other pollutants within just minutes.

We love using this unit near the kitchen, where gas-stove cooking fumes, smoke, and odors tend to build up the most. It's also a powerhouse at clearing pet dander, dust, and seasonal pollen, making it an allergy sufferer's dream for relief from sneezing and congestion. And, it's been our go-to for clearing out that smoky haze when wildfire season rolls through the High Sierras.

We found the 5510 easy enough to use and appreciate that it has both an app and a built-in air-quality sensor, keeping things running smoothly with minimal effort and noise. However, we were disappointed that the customer support wasn't very helpful in answering some of our questions.

Another con: the Winix's outstanding performance comes at a high price—roughly $100 a year. The annual price of replacement filters stings, but it's a worthwhile tradeoff if you need relief from particularly poor air quality.

If you're an allergy sufferer or need high-quality air purification for smoke, industrial pollution, or other irritants, then the Winix 5510 is a solid option. This top-performing air purifier is perfect for medium- to large-sized spaces, such as living rooms, master bedrooms, or apartments. But it'll cost you in the form of expensive replacement filters. Consider how much you are willing to spend each year, and whether you need actual True HEPA and pelleted carbon filters or if standard, low-cost options will do.

If you need something with lower upkeep costs, the Coway Airmega Mighty 1512HH performs nearly the same and offers cheaper replacement HEPA filters, but costs a bit extra upfront. Or, if you have a small to medium-sized space, the Levoit Core 300-P has exceptional cleaning power and a pelleted carbon filter for smoke, fumes, and VOCs, but lacks true HEPA filtration. Lastly, the Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max is one of our favorite purifiers for low- to moderate-pollution levels, though it lacks both pelleted carbon and true HEPA filtration.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Air Cleaning Performance

With a powerful fan and a robust 4-stage filtration system that pulls in and traps nasty air pollutants, the Winix 5510 is one of the most effective air scrubbers in our lineup.

Its certified True HEPA filter and Advanced Odor Control Carbon filter work together to rapidly clear allergens, smoke, dust, pet dander, viruses, odors, VOCs, and more from your air, helping you create a cleaner, healthier space to live or work in. By capturing 99.9% of pollutants all the way down to an ultrafine size of 0.01 µm, the Winix delivers deep, thorough cleaning that's especially helpful for allergy sufferers and smoke-prone homes.

In our intensive tests, it cleared smoke better than most other models, rapidly turning a smoke-filled, hazy 200 ft² space into a breathable one. Within just 10 minutes, the Winix's HEPA filter trapped 82% of large ash particles greater than 2.5 µm and 76% of fine soot particles greater than 0.5 µm, which is seriously impressive. And by 32 minutes, our space was 99% clean. Plus, its pelleted carbon filter does a much better job tackling lingering odors and gases than the thin, carbon-coated sheets used by many competitors.

If you need even more rapid air purification, you can turn on the optional PlasmaWave ionizer, which helps trap pesky air contaminants. We prefer to use air purifiers with the ionizer off to avoid potential health risks from ozone emissions, but it's nice to have the option when you need that extra boost. And you can feel safer using the ionizer on this model, since it's certified to emit only 0.22 parts per billion of ozone, which is well below typical indoor levels.

The 5510 is an excellent choice for tackling heavy indoor pollution—from pets and pollen to urban grime, cooking smoke, and wildfires. It works best in medium- to large-sized spaces, such as kitchens, studio apartments, dens, or small classrooms/daycare rooms, that are around 400 ft². But if you have a larger space that doesn't require heavy-duty cleaning, the Winix can be used in open-concept houses and office suites up to 1800 ft².

Noise

The 5510 ranks about average in terms of sound. At most fan speeds, it produces a soft, soothing, low hum that we actually enjoyed listening to. However, it got a bit too rowdy at the highest speed, which hurt its overall score.

Unlike most competitors, the Winix offers five fan levels to choose from. This allowed us to dial in the perfect noise level so we could go about our day without noticing it running in the background.

In sleep mode, it's actually one of the quietest models we've tested; at 28 decibels, we could barely even tell it was on. But in turbo mode, it was loud enough to disrupt our peaceful workflow. It isn't uncomfortably loud, but still something we'd rather avoid listening to for hours on end.

Ease of Use

The Winix scored about average in ease of use thanks to intuitive controls and a great set of features that automate air monitoring. However, it's not the easiest to set up and move around.

The controls are clearly labeled, so it's easy to adjust the fan speed or just let the built-in sensor handle it for you. In auto mode, it monitors your air for you and adjusts the fan speed on its own—no babysitting required. Plus, the Winix app lets you turn the purifier on or off when you're cozied up in bed or away from home, or set a schedule to match your daily routine. A heads-up, though: the app's air quality readings didn't always match the unit's light-up display.

The downside is that the app and filters take a bit of time to set up. Luckily, the app isn't required to use the purifier, so you can keep things simple if you prefer. We also wish this model had a child lock and an option to turn the lights off when the fan is running on low, medium, high, or turbo mode. Still, it has most of the features users want for easy, everyday use, and its discreet controls didn't invite much curiosity from our kids.

At 13 pounds, the 5510 is one of the heaviest models we tested. That said, it has a centrally located, deep, ergonomic handle that was comfortable for us to lift and carry from room to room. Still, if you have arthritic fingers, you might struggle with the weight.

Operating Cost

The Winix is one of the most energy-efficient models we tested, but the $80 replacement filters are no joke. Given the high cost of filters, the Winix's estimated annual operating cost is $109, which is slightly higher than average.

If you're considering this air purifier, make sure you're okay with the replacement filter fee you'll have to pay to keep it running at peak performance. As with most high-performing air purifiers, better filtration comes with higher long-term maintenance costs, so you'll have to weigh what's more important to you—lower ongoing costs or strong, consistent relief from smoke, allergies, or other irritants.
