Our Analysis and Test Results
As a “premium” version of the award-winning Hamilton Beach Big Mouth, the Big Mouth Premium Juice Extractor is powered by a more robust, 850 watt dual-speed motor for more dialed juicing options depending on the produce. It still features an oversized pulp container and includes a stainless steel lid lock, a 40-ounce pitcher with a “frother separator,” and a cleaning brush specially designed to scrub the filter.
Performance Comparison
Juice Quality
This metric is perhaps the most important aspect of our juicer testing since we all have the same goal of producing a delicious and nutritious glass of fresh juice. We used three different juice recipes — comprised of various fruits and vegetables — to evaluate the Big Mouth Premiumjuicing performance. The oversized pulp container makes it easy to experiment with a large variety of ingredients without fear of having to empty it halfway through juicing. You can easily switch the dual-speed motor between low and high settings, which allows for a seamless transition between different types of produce that may require more or less power to process.
The juice is fed through an adjustable spout into a 40-ounce pitcher — combined with the oversized pulp container; it is evident that this centrifugal model is specifically designed to process large amounts of juice at one time. The included pitcher features a “froth separator,” which we particularly appreciate because the juice trends towards the thinner side, often accompanied by a relatively significant amount of foam. The filter does a great job of keeping pulp to a minimum, but depending on the recipe, juice can be a bit gritty despite a well-blended taste. Overall, the Big Mouth Premium offers an average juice quality consistent with its price point.
Soft Produce
This centrifugal model features a 3-inch wide chute that can accommodate all but the largest apples. This “wide mouth” feature is what makes the Big Mouth series so popular, and we very much understand why: feeding whole foods to a juicer significantly cuts down on prep time.
Based on the less extravagant base model results, we didn't expect much by way of soft produce juice production from the Big Mouth Premium. We did hold out hope, given that this model features a dual-speed motor with a low setting. Averaged across four types of soft produce, this model only produced average yields. While the juice was only mildly pulpy, it was surprisingly foamy — juicing apples and oranges made an average of 1 inch of foam.
Hard Produce
Thanks to a powerful 850-watt motor, the Big Mouth Premium excels at extracting juice from hard produce. This metric is certainly a stand-out for this juicer because it can produce juice yields on par with some of the highest-rated juicers we tested. That means you can expect the Big Mouth Premium to make more juice than directly comparable centrifugal models, using the same amount of hard produce.
Not only does this have positive implications for your budget, but you can extract more juice with less food preparation, thus saving you both time and money. For those who are particular fans of carrot juice, the Big Mouth Premium produced, on average, as much if not more juice than the most expensive juicers in this review — including both centrifugal and masticating models. Although a juice may contain moderate to high amounts of pulp (depending on the type of produce used), it is unlikely to have very much foam.
Leafy Greens
Without a doubt, the biggest downside to an otherwise quality value juicer is the extraction capability of the Big Mouth Premium when it comes to juicing leafy greens. Though not quite the lowest yields — including lower outputs by some more expensive models — this centrifugal juicer should not be considered if you are looking for a model capable of juicing wheatgrass, spinach, or kale.
Even though spinach was the exception to this generalization, the Big Mouth Premium produced bottom-rung yields for most green juices. For wheatgrass specifically, this juicer wasn't able to squeeze out more than a few droplets, and it's very unlikely it would yield much more even with large amounts of wheatgrass.
Cleaning
After chopping up and shredding produce, the discs and filters of many centrifugal juicers can be quite a pain to clean. Fortunately, the Big Mouth Premium includes a specially designed “Easy Sweep” brush that locks onto the strainer to sweep away the bulk of the produce. While this tool helps clean the filter portion, we prefer a small, single brush with tough bristles for effective scrubbing of the discs specifically. The oversized pulp container has rounded edges and is large enough to maneuver your hand into to scrub easily. While there are some tight spots here and there, all of the components are dishwasher safe, which always simplifies this process.
Should You Buy the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Premium?
If you are looking for a juicer that looks clean on the countertop and is even easier to clean up after juicing, the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Premium presents a fantastic value for a mid-level model. Excellent for hard food and particularly easy to clean, this premium centrifugal juicer is undoubtedly a step up from the base model. While the original Hamilton Beach Big Mouth earns our pick for best overall value, the Big Mouth Premium may be worth the small extra expense. In particular, the slightly more powerful, 2-speed motor improves upon versatility. And the included pitcher, or more importantly, the froth separator inside of it, helps remove pulp and other solids for a cleaner, more refreshing juice.
What Other Juicer Should You Consider?
For a slight bump in the budget, the Breville Juice Fountain Plus is arguably the better option. This high-scoring juicer performed better in our tests for juice quality and its ability to juice harder produce like carrots and sweet potatoes. It isn't that there is anything wrong with the Big Mouth Premium; we just think you can either save a little and get essentially the same performance out of the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth or you can spend a little more and get a better performing machine.
