Our Analysis and Test Results
The HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color is a fairly compact all-in-one printer that is an excellent budget-friendly choice for reliable document printing and provides other home office services.
Performance Comparison
Text Quality
We subjected the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color to a number of tests designed to evaluate the overall text quality of prints, as well as the text clarity of each print job.
In our black and white text quality metric, we observed results that were consistent with other HP models. The HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color produces deeper, darker, and truer blacks than other printers, with a few instances of prints looking more bold than the originals due to intense blackness.
We also found the performance was consistent across various prints. In some instances, we observed a little blurriness or fuzziness, specifically in dealing with challenging fonts, but overall, everything was very legible.
Graphics and Photos
The HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color offers some of the most stunning and high-quality graphics and photo printing among all the printers tested. In general, the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color exhibits a wide range of color and color accuracy, although colors were more accurate for graphic prints than they were for photo prints.
Like we've seen with other HP printers, blues were a little bit over-saturated, as were yellows. The text in graphics is crisp but appears dark gray at times rather than black, mostly when on top of images and color backgrounds.
Black and white high-resolution photos printed using only black ink had an occasional streak in large background gradients, but the details were very crisp in general. Color photo prints have a high level of contrast, making lines and small details appear sharper and more pronounced. These details were especially visible in our test photo of a boat where darker parts of waves and finer boat details were more visible than with other printers.
Overall, the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color demonstrates exceptional photo quality, outperforming other notable printers with its rich and vivid colors, but also the ability to produce some lovely black and white prints.
Operating Cost
The HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color performed favorably in terms of operating expenses compared to the majority of other household printers we've evaluated in our operating cost test metric.
The replacement cost for black ink totals approximately $21, which is good for 300 pages before replenishment, translating to an average of $34.98 for every 500 sheets. This translates to 7 cents per black and white page — a little cheaper than the average printing costs generated from the test group of 7.7 cents.
With regard to color printing, the replacement cost for color ink totals is $13.99, which is good for 315 pages before replenishment, translating to an average of $22.21 for every ream, or 500 sheets. That works out to a very low 4 cents per page, which is less than half of the average per-page color printing cost generated from the entire test suite.
Both monochrome and color printing expenses are below the typical expectations for household and small office printers, making the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color a good choice for high-quality yet economical printing.
Ease of Use
Like many of the HP products we've tested, the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color makes it quick and easy to go from a printer in a box to processing big jobs.
The setup process for the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color is straightforward, although our testers experienced what is probably a unique incident. The blue ink cartridge unexpectedly sprayed everywhere upon removing the plastic orange guard over the print head. Despite this issue, the setup process was very smooth. The printer LCD screen guides users through the setup, so you don't need to look through a manual or on a website to get going.
The accompanying app is user-friendly and is compatible with both smartphones and laptops. The support website is straightforward, and live chat support proved helpful in dealing with our incident with the blue ink.
The HP OfficeJet 8015e is equipped with a power button and three smart buttons that illuminate when active. The 3-inch display screen is easy to see, although it can be a bit finicky, often activating unintended controls because the screen is rather sensitive. The screen angle is adjustable for optimal viewing, and a “shortcut” option allows users to save preferred settings.
Despite being described as compact, the actual size of the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color doesn't fully align with this classification. We felt it was a little too bulky to be considered “compact”. That said, overall, we were pleased with this model and its ease of setup and operation.
Printing Speed
The HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color is on the quicker side of the spectrum when it comes to printers we've tested.
In just fifteen seconds, the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color efficiently handled our two-page text document test. When faced with a more complex task involving a 10-page document containing a mix of text and photos and utilizing duplex printing, the printer completed the task in two minutes and 26 seconds. Additionally, for high-resolution full-page photo prints, the printer performed swiftly, with a turnaround time of two minutes and 31 seconds.
Lastly, the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color handled our text-only 10-page duplex print in just one minute and ten seconds and performed the task using the simplex setting in 41 seconds. This translates to an impressive printing speed of nine pages per minute for duplex printing and 15 pages per minute for simplex printing. For comparison, the fastest printer we tested performed these tasks at an average of 17 and 33 pages per minute.
Should You Buy the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color?
Its more modest upfront cost, all-around good performance, and relatively low operating costs make the HP OfficeJet 8015e Wireless Color our top choice for those who are interested in a printer whose main purpose will be document printing and are looking for a good value on a budget.
What Other Printers Should You Consider?
If you just need a basic printer with low operating costs, take a look at the Epson EcoTank ET-2800. It doesn't excel with photos and graphics and it's not the fastest printer, but operating costs are half of some of the premium models. If you're looking for an all-in-one to extend your printing services to copying, faxing, and scanning, then you'll want to take a look at the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw. Although, its premium performance and extra features and functions do come at a premium price.
