The 8.3 megapixel sensor doesn't seem to compete on paper, but its 4K images wowed us with their consistent clarity. The 1080p video looked great on our phones, giving us plenty of detail when examining moose and bear that walked in front of the camera. The integrated SIM card automatically scans for and connects to the strongest available carrier. “I'm not a fan of monthly service costs, but I did get addicted to seeing what was going on out in the woods every day,” Chris said. “On a practical level, when the camera was taking photos of grasses blowing in the wind, the app let me remotely turn down the motion sensitivity without needing to go back out in the field to do it manually.”

The biggest drawback to the Tactacam Reveal X 3.0 is the service plan requirement. Plans start at just $5/month for 250 uploaded photos and around $13/month for unlimited photos. While it will technically continue to function without a cellular service plan, you lose remote control of the camera via the app. In addition, the integrated SIM hardware system continues to burn energy as it looks for a carrier to connect to, leading to rapid battery drain — so it's not effective manually without a plan. The Spypoint Flex-M has a free cellular service plan option that will upload the first 100 photos each month while retaining full remote app control over the camera. Still, for hunters, wild animal enthusiasts, and property managers, the Reveal X 3.0 delivers a big overall quality boost that's less likely to leave you frustrated when cool critters show up, delivering the quality experience we think people want most.

The Bushnell Core S-4K wowed us with its clear 30 megapixel photos and 4K video. When we set it up on a tight game trail in a forest, it did a masterful job of snapping photos and video of wild animals on the move. Despite its position close to the trail, we saw no nighttime evidence that animals noticed its presence at all, reinforcing its no-glow claim. “I'm not sure how Bushnell does it, but the Core S-4K consistently triggered and took photos and video of the subject near the center of frame. When I was walking and jogging during trigger testing, there I was, in the center,” Chris said. “In the wild, this meant we had photos of centered animals more frequently than partial heads and butts walking in and out of the frame.” We used this camera most in Hybrid mode that took 1 photo and 1 video when it was triggered, but you can manually change it to take up to 6 photos when it's triggered.

While we appreciate that we don't need an app or an online service for setup, the biggest drawback to the built-in 1.5" color screen is that it's harder to change the settings in the field than it is with cellular cameras. Still, you can view media on the built-in screen, and you can tune the camera's settings to prioritize nighttime illumination distance, photo and video sizes, and even time-lapse photography. With a field of view of just 50°, you'll want to use the viewfinder to ensure you're pointed optimally. If you're looking for a traditional camera to capture a wider area, the Wosports G600 has a 120° FOV, making it a great backyard camera that can see more than twice as much of your patio, deck, or yard. Of course, if quality is a top priority, stick with the Core S-4K. We were consistently stoked by the crisp detail.

The GardePro A3S is the best budget-friendly non-cellular trail camera we tested. It produced vivid photos and crisp video with discernible audio. It also has a Pic + Video mode that takes both photos and video when triggered. “I thought this model was a bit overhyped until I set it up on a game trail, where it excelled with its photo and video hybrid mode,” Chris said. “On fast-moving deer it produced a bit of motion blur and sometimes seemed to trigger a bit late, but slower moving moments were sometimes gorgeous.” You should know that the “48MP” rating comes from software upscaling, so that's not a good indicator of quality. However, the camera's image quality overall was better than average — and far better than what we've seen from cheap competition.

Unfortunately, some videos showed more motion blur than we expected even in good lighting. During our tests we could see motion blur during fast walking or jogging. Feeding deer tended to remain crisp, however, so this may not be a dealbreaker for you. When the subjects are far away, they appear quite small and can be lost by the impressive detail of the images, which have a shallow depth of field. GardePro advertises a trigger speed of 0.1 to 0.6 seconds. But in practice, we found it to perform below average in our tests, with the subject appearing suddenly mid-screen. The claimed 0.5-second recovery time also left large gaps in movement, often only giving us one or two images of an animal as it crossed the screen. The housing body and plastic cam strap buckle are less robust than most other options in the test. For better durability and image quality, the Bushnell Core S-4K is the way to go but costs twice as much. For anyone on a tight budget, though, we were very impressed with this camera's performance.

The Spypoint Flex-M is the best cellular trail camera for anyone on a tight budget. Often sold in a two-pack, this mobile-ready option competes with non-cellular models but also lets you control it via an app. Spypoint's free tier only uploads the first 100 photos each camera takes each month, requiring you to download the remainder from the camera's Micro-SD card. “I like how Spypoint's app lets me remotely control the camera's settings even on its free service tier,” Chris said. “I think this is a cool hybrid option that delivers a better control experience than most non-cellular cameras without forcing you to pay more for instant access and media downloads.”

While we captured some cool critters with the Spypoint Flex-M, the overall image quality is lower than most other cellular cameras we tested. We got some great photos and acceptable video. We even nabbed some photos of an elusive bobcat at night, but the quality reduces them to a barely discernible blur. If you choose to pay for the monthly Premium package at $15/month, the overall value of the Flex-M decreases in comparison because you can get better quality from competitive cameras with similar monthly payments. For instance, the Tactacam Reveal X 3.0 is just as easy to use, and while it costs more out of the box, the unlimited Pro plan goes for $13/month. Similarly, if you wanted to run four or more cameras, the Moultrie Edge 3 can start penciling out for a value win, too. Still, if you're ready to dip into cellular trail cams but don't want to commit to monthly fees, the Flex-M is our favorite option. We think it's great for lightweight scouting and areas that get infrequent animal traffic.

How We Tested
We tested these cameras side by side for months to highlight their relative strengths and weaknesses. We spent over 200 hours with these cameras and had them set up in the field for several weeks during each testing period. During our testing, we took over 25,000 photos and videos. We then used this media as an objective comparison point to assess performance. We evaluated how well each camera performed day and night and in inclement weather, and considered how its features affected our user experience. Then, we critically analyzed each one to deliver an honest, unbiased review based on our hands-on experience.

To design our test plan, we considered trail camera users' most pressing needs and structured our examination accordingly. We scored each product's performance, image quality, ease of operation, features, and durability and ranked each product relative to the competition. In addition, for cellular-connected models, we purchased cellular service plans with unlimited photo uploads, and we sometimes purchased add-ons to test HD photo and video uploads that cost more.

What's the Best Value?
As people who spend a lot of time thinking about and testing tech products, we find that you often get what you pay for. However, in the realm of trail cameras, depending on your needs, you can spend a lot less than top dollar and be completely satisfied with your purchase.
Take the GardePro A3S, for example. Often on sale, it costs less than half of the most expensive models yet is feature-rich, with impressive image quality and admirable performance. It triggered photos with acceptable speed and accuracy in both our daytime and nighttime tests. While it didn't deliver our favorite photos, many of its captures are stunning. This model does seem less durable, with a plastic buckle on the mounting strap and a lighter-duty housing body. But if you take care of it, you'll likely get your money's worth.

For cellular cameras, the Tactacam Reveal X 3.0 is a great option for anyone willing to pay a monthly service fee ranging from $5 to $13/month, but it's eclipsed by the free monthly option you can get with the two-pack Spypoint Flex-M Twin. If you care more about identifying animals than getting frame-worthy photos, the free Spypoint plan is a particularly compelling value.

Performance
To judge each camera's overall performance, we tested their trigger speed, detection range, image recovery time, battery life, and the clarity of their video sound capture (i.e., bird song and deer snorts). We tested the first three points by placing the cameras in their highest quality settings, set them at 3.5 feet, then walked and jogged in front of each camera at 10-foot intervals out to 100 feet. We repeated this at night — which is tricky, sprinting in the pitch black! We also used the same setup to test their video capability.
The newest cameras in our test tended to perform the best overall, as did those with cellular service capabilities and modern apps. However, some tried-and-true traditional cameras showed up, too.

Both the Tactacam Reveal X 3.0 and Bushnell Core S-4K have the ability to take both photos and video during the same triggering event, which is the setting we used to test their performance. Both consistently triggered a photo when we were about 1/3 into the frame. They then followed up quickly with a video that started recording when we were near the middle. This pattern was remarkably consistent all the way out to 100 feet away. We trust these cameras to identify a moving animal and capture it within the frame even when using a complicated “Pic + Video” mode.

The Stealth Cam Deceptor Max 2.0 has either/or photo vs video settings, so we set it to take photos during our performance tests — and it took a lot of them. It usually took 2-3 photos of us out to 50 feet as we walked or jogged in front of the camera, then it usually nabbed 3-6 from 50 to 100 feet away because we had to travel farther to evade its sensors. Night wasn't as impressive though: We often triggered the camera but we were only discernible out to 60 feet. Ether way, night or day, the Deceptor pays attention and wants to take photos. We think it's particularly good for high-traffic areas, partially because it has a dual processor that an upload photos with one processor while taking photos with the other.

The Moultrie Edge 3 had the fastest initial trigger, often taking photos of us within the first 10% of the frame. With this kind of fast-acting detection, you'll likely want to consider setting this camera to shoot three photos at a time before increasing its default detection delay. Moultrie also has a Smart Burst setting that decides to take 2-10 photos based on the motion it detects. For a slow moving deer, you might get three photos. For a fast moving coyote, it might give you a 10-shot burst. The challenge is finding the right balance for your target animals and location so you don't end up with dozens of essentially the same photos — or not enough of the ones you want.

The Muddy Trifecta 180 seemed to perform poorly in our trigger test because it seemed to take hundreds of false shots, but it has a very good excuse: Its unique ultra-wide, three-zone system triggers so widely that we struggled to get far enough away from its sensors to give it a chance to relax. Here's what happened: We'd be 40 yards away and off to the side and it would sense us move then immediately trigger to take three photos in three zones. Then, because we had it set to no delay between shots, it tried to take another 3-shot batch of photos every two seconds or so. The results were overwhelming — lots of photos as expected with at least two that showed a static scene, then hundreds more far-edge photos.
The Muddy Trifecta 180 has the widest field of view of all the cameras we tested. Essentially, it's three sensors all working together to spark three quick photos in three directions.
Ultimately, in real-world situations the Muddy Trifecta 180 did its job as designed, so we ranked it accordingly. Basically, it's designed to cover a massive 180° half-circle. It triggers out on edges that other cameras can't even see and takes three photos (or starts one video). It offers outstanding coverage for open spaces like fields or meadows or forested areas where multiple game trails converge. The drawback is you can end up with a lot scenery photos when animals are only in one of the three coverage zones.

In contrast, the worst performers all struggled with distance or timing and recovery — but we were able to capture decent wildlife photos once we understood their limitations and sweet spots. For instance, the Browning Strike Force Pro DCL Nano suffered in particular ways that affected its overall score in this metric. While this camera has one of the best recovery rates in the test (8 seamless photos with a small gap to the next set of rapid-fire images), it has one of the smallest detection ranges, dropping out of our backyard tests at 30 feet during the day and 10 feet at night. Its performance in our wildlife tests was better — extending to 40-50 feet during the day and 30-40 feet at night — but even that improvement didn't stack up to the better options.

The GardePro A3S suffers in two areas, with middle-of-the-road trigger speed and recovery rate. That means you get fewer photos of every animal that passes by. Yet, it has an impressive detection range that let it nab photos out to 100 feet both day and sometimes even at night.

Cellular Cameras Give You More Settings for Customization
Cameras with cellular services all have smartphone and web-based apps to control them remotely, which also tends to result in easy ways to customize their settings. You can radically tune your camera's performance by adjusting its characteristics to better fit the terrain and behavior of the animals you're trying to see. Non-cellular cameras give you far fewer choices, but you can still usually adjust the number of photos they take and the time lag in between new photos.
Image Quality
To judge image quality, we considered the photos' and videos' clarity and color, the cameras' ability to freeze motion, and how well they focus on subjects throughout their field of view. We have examined over 25,000 photos and videos to make our determinations. Admittedly, this is a challenging metric to judge since many cameras offer impressive yet very different photos. In addition, lighting and effective camera positioning can make or break a photo — neither of which may be the camera's fault! Still, several trends appeared over time.
The Browning Strike Force Pro landed on top with a wide range of focus, bright, color-corrected images, and the ability to stop motion for crisp images at a walking pace. You can set its image resolution from 4 to 26MP — we tested it at 10MP in its default mode and at 26MP during the range test and in the field. Both yielded some of our favorite photos. The camera's 1080P video shot at 60 frames per second didn't yield our favorite videos, but its quality is solid.

The Tactacam Reveal X 3.0 impressed us with its ability to take both quality photos and video based on the same trigger event, which sometimes created unexpected and delightful scenes, such as when a doe triggered a photo that led to scampering yearling in harsh morning light.

The Vikeri game camera offers impressively high-quality photos and video, though it does not excel at stopping motion at night, especially when animals are close to the camera. It tends to overexpose the subject, making it appear ghostly white. Unfortunately, since moisture worked its way into the housing during the seven-week field test, many of the daytime wildlife photos are foggy, and there is moisture behind the screen. If you can protect this camera from rain, you'll be rewarded with an excellent, wide-angled view of your local wildlife.

The GardePro is a perfect example of midrange image quality. Sometimes it offered striking photos and impressive video quality — and sometimes not so much. In our backyard test, it froze our test runner perfectly in place with a crisp image. It also produced the best nighttime photos. Unfortunately, in the wild it was more hit or miss when the lighting was more diverse.

Ease of Operation
To judge the ease—or difficulty—of operating each device, we assessed the usefulness of their manuals and the ease of initial setup. We noted how well they mounted to trees and how long it took us to find the correct angle and determine each camera's field of view. Finally, we judged how challenging it was to change their settings and check their batteries in the field.
The Bushnell Core S-4K's setup process is straightforward, with a clear and streamlined interface. The menu is intuitive, the screen is bright, and the buttons and switches are easy to operate — but it is sometimes difficult to see the text in bright sun or when there is glare on the screen. You don't have to open the entire front of the housing to change settings, so the camera still points at your area of interest, which is handy when you're targeting an area. We could frame our shots just by looking at the screen.

The GardePro's simple menu makes it easy to run through the initial setup and change settings on the fly. The short and sweet manual gives you the information you need and little else. Most of the cameras include a textured mounting panel on the back of their housing to increase friction against a tree, but the GardePro does not. This makes attaching to certain tree varieties a bit more challenging, but not by much.

A motion test mode shows you what you're pointing at by flashing red whenever the sensor sees you. The Bushnell Core S-4K, Reconyx, and Browning cameras also provide this handy setup assistance.
The Vikeri is nearly as easy to use and set up as the GardePro, although its manual isn't as clear. And instead of showing you where it's pointing using a motion test light, you can only take a test photo, which is a little more cumbersome. We liked to just stand behind it and kept the housing propped open just enough to see the screen to know what we'll capture. It also features a thread-through buckle on its strap instead of a more preferable cam strap.

The Browning Strike Force Pro is built similarly to the Bushnell Core S-4K except that its buttons light up, which is marvelous in low light. The Strike Force Pro is also the only camera we tested that angles away from its base, making it easy to accommodate the lean of a tree, although the clawed clasp on the tree strap is annoying to use. While we love that the stationary camera and integrated screen make setup straightforward, there are some drawbacks to this model. Namely, the battery pack also ejects from the bottom of the camera. But with no latch, it often falls to the forest floor. It is also important to note that the manual isn't very handy.

Most cameras we tested had a few grippy nubs on the back that could stick to the bark of a tree when snugged in place, but the Stealth Cam Defector Max Dual and Muddy Trifecta 180 shared an ingenious, toothed curve that secured their positioning more easily than all others.

We quickly learned that we could alter the vertical angle based on the position of the strap. For example, lower positioning results in more forward tipping.

The Muddy Trifecta 180 was super easy to attack to tree trunks and adjust its angle, particularly during higher mountings that needed to point at a downward angle.
To judge the usefulness of each camera's features, we thoroughly studied them to build a comprehensive list. Then, we tested their effectiveness in the field similarly to how we assessed ease of operation. All of the cameras include some standard features, like lock-compatible housing for security, but there are still notable differences in their full feature sets.
One feature we've come to appreciate is the ability to use a hybrid mode that takes both photos and video when an animal is detected. All the Bushnell cameras we tested offer a hybrid mode, as well as the the GardePro, Vikeri, Reconyx, Tactacam Reveal X 3.0, Moultrie Edge 3, and Wosports G600.

Disappointingly, the Stealth Cam Deceptor Max, Muddy Trifecta 180, and Spypoint Flex-M require you to choose between photos or videos — not both.

Most high-quality trail cameras now offer a time-lapse or “Field Scan” mode that snaps photos throughout the day at adjustable intervals without a trigger. The Reconyx will adjust the timing of the photos as day length changes throughout the season, a nifty feature it calls 'solar timing.' Interestingly, the Bushnell Cellucore 20 is one of few cameras we tested that doesn't have a time-lapse feature.
All of the cellular cameras offer both browser-based web app controls with phone apps. They provide remote connectivity over cellular networks that uploads photos to the apps, includes notifications, lets you request (and pay for) HD photo and video downloads, and lets you change settings on the fly. For instance, if an aggressive weed grows up into the field of view then blows in the wind to trigger photos or video, you can reduce the motion sensitivity from the apps.
Aside from getting photos and video delivered to the palm of your hand, the coolest feature of all the cellular cameras is the ability to monitor cameras and change settings from an app. The Spypoint Flex-M is a budget-focused cellular model, but it still offers key features like the ability to remotely change settings and monitor battery life. The Moultrie Edge 3 takes remote management to another level: If the landscape changes around your camera, for example, if a branch grows or becomes a chronic trigger point in wind, Moultrie's Smart Zones feature lets you exclude it as a trigger area. This can massively reduce false triggers and reduce the need for you to visit the camera in the wild to fix a landscape problem.
Durability
Trail cameras should be durable enough to handle inclement weather and rugged enough to take some abuse. To test durability, we examined the construction and hardiness of the materials, then left the cameras out in the wind, rain, snow, and heat for up to seven weeks at a time.
When you're investing in a trail camera, it's likely that part of the plan is to leave the device exposed to whatever Mother Nature will throw at it for days, weeks, or even months at a time. Our team found that the Bushnell Core S-4K appeared to have the most rugged build quality. We're particular fans of the beefy latches and waterproof housing of these cameras. And it helps that only the bottom half of the housing opens, leaving less room for water to sneak in, especially through the more vulnerable roof where water could leak down into the internal components.

The cellular cameras we tested were also made from solid materials, but the antennas reduce their overall durability. Sometimes curious bears can break them off.

Luckily, most of the cases seem very well made, with excellent-quality clasps to hold the cases closed. Only the Vikeri and GardePro clasps are disappointing, with metal-wire gripping plastic hooks that seem to create a weaker seal. But only the Vikeri camera housing leaked during our test phase. A noticeable amount of water accumulated at the bottom of the camera, which resulted in moisture fogging the screen and obscuring the lens. We have dried it out, and it still works, but we wouldn't expect this camera to last very long if you plan to use it in a wet climate. Alternatively, the Reconyx includes a rain shield over the lens to protect it from rain, snow, or frost.
