Our Verdict
The TP-Link Tapo 2k Pan c210 is an affordable indoor security camera that can rotate 360 degrees, tilt 114 degrees up and down, with motion detection and average image clarity. I love the ability the Tapo app has to save camera monitoring presets that quickly snap to your desired viewpoints. The Tapo delivered surprisingly clear and sharp image quality in our assessment when compared to other security cameras that we tested, but it falls a bit short with clunky subject tracking and a somewhat antiquated app.

Our Analysis and Test Results
The TP-Link Tapo 2k Pan c210 is a hard-wired indoor camera that is more affordable than most cameras that we've tested. It features pan and tilt capabilities, enabling it to pan 360 degrees horizontally and tilt up to 114 degrees vertically.

Video Quality
The entry-level priced TP-Link Tapo 2k Pan c210 delivered shockingly clear and color-accurate image quality, and I'm able to recognize subjects from far away. The colors are pretty dark, but the saturation is pretty evenly spread, and overall, it is pretty close to the color you'd expect to see.
Day Testing Night Testing
The TP-Link has fairly consistent video clarity at all times of the day, though the daytime quality is just a bit better.
The 2k image quality of the TP-Link is quite sharp, but the colors do come across a little flat. The nighttime image quality is quite clear, but a little too bright, which sacrifices a lot of detail. Overall, the Tapo 2k features clearer image quality than most others within its price range.

Monitoring Performance
The subject recognition on the TP-Link Tapo 2k works well and alerted me to a man walking towards my home up to 20 feet away. To optimize monitoring (so that it doesn't alert you to something like branches swaying in front of the camera), it features a simple 4-point drag-and-drop system to personalize your motion zones. However, I found this to be less customizable than other cameras we tested.

All told, Tapo is pretty bare bones when it comes to features compared to other cameras, offering subject recognition, person identification, sound, and two-way audio.

Ease of Use
The middling app of the TP-Link Tapo 2k is unintuitive compared to most others that we've reviewed. Once you open the app, you're presented with a list of the cameras in your system, but without any thumbnail or live view of the camera feed.
Once you select a camera, the Tapo app is a more traditional experience with quick controls for taking screenshots, recording, two-way audio capability, panning, tilting, and more. The app also allows you to save preset camera views, which I found useful. It also requires a hard-wired connection, making it less easy to set up. Overall, the Tapo app isn't terrible, but it lags behind competitors.

Should You Buy the TP-Link Tapo 2k Pan c210?
If you're new to security cameras and want to dip your toes into security monitoring on a tight budget, the TP-Link Tapo 2k Pan c210 is a great entry-level camera with surprisingly crisp and clear video quality and basic subject recognition. By utilizing the local storage, you can use the TP-Link Tapo without a subscription, but you'll also need to purchase a micro SD card that can be as large as 256 GB. Otherwise, you can consider subscribing to Tapo Care, which utilizes cloud storage to store 30 days of past footage and enables some extra features, like child crying detection. Keep in mind that the Tapo requires a hard-wired power connection, so those hoping to monitor where power outlets aren't close by should consider a camera that supports battery power instead.

What Other Security Cameras Should You Consider?
Although the TP-Link Tapo 2k offers great value, it's far from the clearest and feature-rich camera that we've had our hands on. If you're intrigued by the pan/tilt with the addition of motion tracking capabilities, you should also check out the Eufy Indoor Cam E220 and Wyze Cam Pan V3. Both offer smooth, responsive motion tracking.
